| Mountrail County History
Created by the 1873 territorial legislature, the county was named for a Metis voyageur, Joseph Mountraille.
The 1891 state legislature eliminated the county. It was re-established as Mountrail when Ward was partitioned through the 1908 November general election.
Government organized: January 29, 1909.
County Seat: Stanley, 1909-present.
Area 1824 square miles.
2000 population -- 6,631.
