McLean was promoted by John Satterlund in the later 1870's when he settled in the area. The town, Washburn, was established in November 1, 1882 and, was part of the homestead of John Veeder. McLean County was established on March 8, 1883 and organized on November 1, 1883. McLean County is named after John A. McLean (1849-1916), Mayor of Bismarck, and a merchant and stockman. He had large land holdings in the Hancock District 20 miles northwest of Washburn.
Area 2287 square miles.
2000 population -- 10,454.
