PHOTO:  Groce Brage Banks and wife Ethel Prudence Hensley and son before she was killed by "accidental" gun shot.  She was the d/o Gilbert Bryson Hensley and Guy Lula Edney of Prices Creek Area of Yancey.  Her father Gilbert Bryson, brother Eugene and Prudence were killed by Groce, Carl, Coy & Gay Banks at the Old Red store near Paint Gap on Aug 8, 1920.  There was a family argument and Prudence stepped in front of her father and was killed along with father and brother in a gun fight.  She was holding her young son Harold but he was not injured.  The shooting was declared self-defense and the Banks boys were acquitted.  During the trial, the bullets retrieved from Prudence and Gene were bullets from their father's gun.  The bullet that killed Brice was from one of the Bank's brothers.   After the death of Prudence, Groce Banks moved to the Asheville area, remarried to Ruth Ella Hayes.  Some family members claim Groce lost his mind shortly before he died September 20, 1963.  Groce's son was killed in an automobile accident.  Carl Banks died from cancer; and another one died in a car wreck.
