   HOME   


Heading on Rt. 19W from Unicoi Co. towards Burnsville, NC, make a right onto Little Creek Road which crosses over the Cane River -see map below.  You will pass a general store/gas station on the left.  Make the next left onto Bald Mountain Road.  Proceed on Bald Mountain Rd for about 2.5 miles to Grapevine Lane.  You will see the cemetery on the right side from the road.

8.  HENSLEY, Silas Milton

b. October 10, 1874 - d. September 15, 1943

[s/o Bacchus S. Hensley and Adelia Radford buried Hensley Cem. Bald Mnt.]

NOTE:  Silas owned-operated a general store (which still stand today) like his father Bacchus who was also known in the region as the "Baron."  Bacchus married 3 times, [1st Adelia Radford].  Bacchus is mentioned in T. R. Dawley's book The Child that Toileth Not, 1912 - pgs. 341-343; 349; 351; Harvard Digital Library.  The "Egypt" chapter reviews the lifestyle and hardship of folks in this remote part of the Appalachia.   The author interviewed merchant/store owner Bacchus "Baron" S. Hensley who explained that most folks in the Egypt area are Hensley descendants.   He also expressed his opinion on the illiteracy, work ethic, and poverty of Egypt Twp. and how so many folks falsified their Civil War pensions to collect money.  Bacchus was killed shortly after this interview at his store in 1912.   ==>Photo; Bacchus S.
