Introduction and Instructions

The project to extract the descriptive books of the 36th Regiment, U. S. Colored Troops is completed. These descriptive books have descriptive rolls of soldiers enlisted into the regiment and lists of officers, noncomissioned officers, deaths, discharges, deserters and transfers. In some cases there were no records in some categories, such as deserters or transfers. Other records may be added to the descriptive book records at a future date. It is important to note that the original descriptive book of Company H was lost or destroyed on the passage from Portsmouth, Va. to Point Lookout, Md. on or about February 22, 1864. There also may be missing records for discharges from Company G. The first page was full and there were no discharges listed by S. O. 18 on October 28, 1866. This indicates there was either a page missed in microfilming or a page missing from the records. This is currently being investigated.

A master index has been created to the regiment's descriptive books. This index contains hot links to all records pertaining to a specific soldier. Because of transfers within the regiment, there may be multiple index records for one individual, one for every company in which he served. Multiple index records may also exist where there were more than one entry in a category, such as sergeants. The existence of a record is indicated by "YES" in the column for that record. Click on the "YES" and you will go directly to that record for that person. Click on the "BACK" button in your browser to return to the place you were in the index. Some index records contain multiple surnames separated by a "/". These indicate that significant differences in the spelling of a soldier's surname exists within the records. In these cases, there may be multiple index records for that soldier in which each surname is listed first.
