"I am the identical Robert Dunbar who served as a private in Company B
35th Regiment U.S.C.T. and who was honorably discharged and that while in
said service and in line of duty at Portsmouth VA on about November 1863,
I incurred piles by straining and drinking bad water. I also had diarrhea
and measles at the same time and was treated in the hospital there 4 or 5
months for the said disease. I never had piles prior to that time and as to
incurrance of same I herewith forward you the testimony of comrade Salamon
Jones a member of my company and regiment and one of Sampson Maclease who
knew me from a boy and that he was a member of Company D 35th Regiment
U.S.C.T. Both who has a clear knowledge of the incurrence of the piles and
have testified to same. I ask that their testimony be accepted as sufficient
proof to establish the origin of the piles in service and in line of duty.
I was unable to secure the testimony of another comrade of my company to
corroborate the testimony of Salamon Jones by reason that he cant located
anywhere and I unable to secure another one. Therefore I have forwarded the
testimony of Sampson Maclease Company D 35th Regiment U.S.C.T who has known
me from a boy and we were frequently together in service and line of duty
and who has clear conception of the incurrence of the piles and testified
to same. I ask that his affidavit be accepted in le of the affidavit of
another comrade of my company as I unable to secure one. I am now a great
