COMMANDS: [ 135th USCI ]

Organized at Goldsboro, N. C., March 28, 1865.

Duty in Dept. of North Carolina till October, 1865.

Mustered out October 23, 1865.

NOTE # 1: At present, very little is known about this regiment other than it was formed in North Carolina early in 1865, served seven months, and was mustered out. I contacted Dr. Richard Reid, a noted researcher on the U.S. Colored Troops in North Carolina, and received this response"

"I know a little bit about the 135th USCT. Louis Manarin has it being mustered in at Page Station, N.C., on March 28, 1865 [ Organized at Goldsboro, N. C., March 28, 1865 ]. I understood that it was made up from the refugees following Sherman's army. 'The regiment contained men from every Southern state east of the Mississippi River and was carried as a North Carolina regiment because it was organized in the State.' [ Duty in Dept. of North Carolina till October, 1865. Mustered out October 23, 1865. ] It was mustered out in Kentucky in October 23, 1865. I have not looked at the description books for this regiment at the NA so I am not sure how many men were from N.C. I had assumed not very many. Let me know if you get more information."

Dr. Richard Reid
