Families of Steele Creek:
Greer/Grier
| The Home of Thomas Pringle Grier | Death of Capt.John Grier |
THE HOME OF THOMAS PRINGLE GRIER, WILLIAM ALEXANDER GRIER AND JAMES PRINGLE GRIER.
Thomas Pringle Grier built the right side of the home as a log cabin about 1846. At his death, his son William Alexander Grier owned the home and made additions to it. At his death in 1920, his son James Pringle Grier occupied the home until his death in 1959. The home was then torn down and William and Carrie Sue Grier built a new home on the site around 1963-64.
Thomas Pringle Grier was the son of Jimmy Grier, who came with his Grandfather, James Grier from Ireland. Jimmy was two years old when they migrated originally to Pa. After the Revolutionary War, the family moved to the Waxhaws, now in Lancaster Co., SC. Around 1781, the family migrated into Steele Creek. Jimmy Grier was a founding elder in 1792 of the old Steele Creek Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church (formerly called Blackstock’s church). (See Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church on this site).
All three three men who lived in the house were elders at Steele Creek ARP and Central Steele Creek. The home was located on what is known today as Sandy Porter Road in Steele Creek. The new Interstate 485 will be going through the back yard of the old home site.
DEATH
OF CAPT. GRIER
(From Ola Sing's Scrapbook - Charlotte Observer, Oct, 1896)
Capt. John B. Grier, one of the most influential citizens of Steel Creek, died at his home suddenly of heart failure at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon, aged seventy years. He seemed well all the morning and his sudden death came as a great shcok to his family. He was a consistent member of the A. R. P. church, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. He was buried at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Steel Creek church, Rev. J. T. Chalmers conducting the services. His death is a loss to his community.
