He was married (Apr 1824 in Randolph County) to Losada BROWN (1800-1805 to Jan-Mar 1843), daughter of Samuel BROWN, also of Randolph County. There is a possibility that John's mother's maiden name was HOOVER. We believe that John may have had at least 3 sisters; Lucinda ELLIOTT HOLTON, wife of Alfred HOLTON, Louisa ELLIOTT YOUNG, wife of Samuel YOUNG, and possibly Mary ELLIOTT YORK, wife of Braxton YORK. John & Losada had 7 children, who were orphaned and lived with various family members with Losada's death. They include Minerva Anne ELLIOTT HANCOCK, Samuel B. ELLIOTT, John R. ELLIOTT, James M. ELLIOTT, Sarah Ann ELLIOTT ALLEN, Malsey Jane ELLIOTT SPINKS CANTLEY, and my 2nd great grandfather, Zimri Franklin ELLIOTT. He is listed as GIBSON before and after, but for some reason when living on the SLACK Farm. Which you can only see looking at the INDEX, not the actual pgs; which the CENSUS NUMBERS #; unless they are on the film; what is on the internet for those Census years(doesn't show the census nrs)shows DAVID GIPSON LIVING WITH THEM, during 1830/1840. 1850 living on his own place(IT APPEARS HE MARRIED A COUSIN, NANCY GIBSON)CA 1816 in Randolph Co., NC. His son direct to my line; Jesse(Jeptha)GIBSON married LUCINDA SLACK. So am looking for those from this line. The family story is that he was paid rent by one of his tentants with hog meat that had been stolen. We believe he served time in a prison in Randolph Co. We have letters postmarked in Millboro. We think he was later transferred to Sampson Co. Is anyone aware of any prisons in Randolph Co. at that time? There is a possibility he may have died while in prison with T.B. The name was changed from Saunders Hill to Ophir in the nineteenth century when a steel mill was built. Ophir was a reference to the land of Ophir mentioned in the Bible as a place where King Solomon obtained gold. I believe John was born in 1780, the son of Barzillai and Jemima members of the New Garden, Guilford, Quaker Meeting. The family transferred to the Deep River MM around 1794. A record in the Marlborough MM on 1-Feb-1817 has a John Gard(e)ner disowned for marrying out of unity.

It is believed that William Diffee served and it is unknown whether Thomas ALLRED or Wiliiam Allred served ini any capacity for the Americans. Per the Allred Family Organization (www.allredfamily.com): Elizabeth Diffee was not married to Thomas. It has been documented that she was actually married to the William Allred who is believed to have been Thomas' brother. William and Elizabeth's wills, estate records, and photos of their tombstones can all be viewed on the AFO web site at http://www.allredfamily.com/william.htm . To our knowledge, no one has been able to document the maiden name of Thomas Allred's wife. Per his will, we know her first name was Elizabeth, but that's all that has been documented about her.
