These surveys were done as part of the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina, a project of the Works Project Administration. The survey was done in the 1930s and 1940s, and was supposed to include only graves dating from before 1914. (The 1937 surveys of Mine Creek Cemetery and Roan Mountain Cemetery by E. S. Hamilton include later graves.) Some cemeteries were surveyed twice. The descriptions of locations are also from the WPA Surveys.
