Formed in 1774 from Halifax and Tyrrell counties, Martin County was named in honor of Josiah Martin, the last Royal Governor of North Carolina 1782-1785 and l789-1792. It is in the eastern part of North Carolina, bounded by Beaufort, Bertie,
Edgecombe, Halifax, Pitt and Washington counties. In 1779 Williamston, first called Squhawky (or Skewarky), was laid out and is now the county seat. Your hosts are BJR & C Rinard. With your help we hope to make this a page that our
Martin County cousins can point to as a prime source when searching for
their Martin Co., North Carolina ancestors. Please send us copies of
any Martin Co. items you may have found or transcribed in your own
research and let us know of any home pages you may have or find so that we
can post a link here to guide others along in their search. The MCHS purchased the historic Asa Biggs House on January 4, 1978, and is currently preserving the structure.
