The American History and Genealogy Project (AHGP), is an unincorporated not-for-profit network of independent sites devoted to History and Genealogy, and covering North American Countries and Territories. We are a group of independent webmasters who link together to share Historical and Genealogical data with researchers.

Macon County was formed in 1828 from Haywood County but a County Government was not
formed until 1829. Named for Nathaniel Macon, speaker of the house of
representatives.
The County seat is Franklin, named for Jesse
Franklin, a Representative and senator from North Caroilina.
The area of the County is 516 square miles.
Population in 2000 Census was 29,811 with 21,391 housing units.
The Nantahala National Forest
is a 531,848 acre forest containing Whitewater Falls, the highest falls east of the Rockies.
Macon County has 153,211 acres in National Forest lands.
The
Applachian Trail
is only a short distance west of Franklin.
