KNIGHTEN

JESSE KNIGHTEN moved around western NC a good deal. I am hoping he has descendants still in Haywood Co who can help me fill in some blanks. I know he was in Montgomery Co, VA in 1789, that he owned land in Rowan, and that a son and a daughter married in Stokes in 1800 so he would likely have been in Haywood sometime between then and 1820 when he appears further west in KY. Any information on the KNIGHTEN family will be greatly appreciated.

SHEPPARD, PRUETT

I am seeking information on my great-great-great grandmother, EVELIN SHEPPARD PRUETT (b. 1837 d. 1939). She married WILLIAM M. PRUETT a well-know Baptist minister in Western North Carolina. Their known children were: AUGUSTA ELVIRA, ? (married Clark Jordan), HARRIETT, MARY, DEWITT, LOYD, WILLIAM, JOHN, and LUTHER. She is buried in Greenhill Cemetery in Waynesville. One of her daughter's obituary states that the daughter was born in Graham County, NC in 1868, so they must have lived there at one time. I have found a JAMES and LAVINIA SHEPPARD on the 1850 NC Rowan County Census who has a female child named EVELIND FRICK, who is the correct age. The spelling of Evelin (I instead of Y) makes me think this might possibly be her. I would appreciate any information on any of the North Carolina SHEPPARD's especially more information on JAMES and LAVINIA and if they might be her parents.

PRUETT'S obituary from the Waynesville Mountaineer states that he was "perhaps one of the best known preachers in this area. He baptized more than 3,000 people and helped build more than a score of churches during the many years of his ministry." HOOPER, LEDBETTER

Hello, researchers, In the book, THE FAMILIES OF HAYWOOD AND JACKSON CO., based on the 1850 census, if listed: Family #834, HOOPER, Andrew M. 30 and Sarah Margaret 28. (Andrew is the son of John HOOPER and Margaret LEDBETTER.) These are my gr. gr. grandparents and this is the only place that I've seen the middle initial for Andrew and the middle name, Margaret, for Sarah. Does anyone have more information or access to the 1850 census? I'm thinking they must not be listed with the initial and middle name in the census, or we'd all be familiar with this additional info.

ROGERS, THORNTON, WASHINGTON

Most of the ROGERS lines in Haywood County NC go back to HUGH ROGERS born ca 1761 and his wife NANCY THORNTON born ca 1764. Supposedly Nancy Thornton was the daughter of Lt. Col. JOHN THORNTON and his wife JANE WASHINGTON. Some sources say that Jane Washington was the daughter of Pres. George Washington's half-brother, Augustine. Other sources that I found on the net have that Augustine's dau. Jane died before Nancy Thornton would have been born. I need help proving/disproving this one way or another. Various of George Washington's documented families go back as far as the 1200s, so it would be fabulous if this rumor were true. I was told 21 yrs. ago that this line related to George Washington's family, but I didn't even check the rumor out.

Albert would be 13 or 14 at the time, therefore he probably would not be listed as head of house on the Census. OWENS, ROBINSON, HOGLEN

I am looking for information on Julia (Juliean) OWENS, born in Tennessee about 1859. She married Columbus ROBINSON about 1883. They are listed on the Haywood County 1900 Census. Columbus ROBINSON was born in North Carolina in 1862; he died in 1930. His father was Nathan Bowen ROBINSON from North Carolina, born 1822, died 1890. Columbus' mother was Elizabeth HOGLEN also from North Carolina, born 1827, died 1890. I have some more information on this line if anyone else is researching them. Julia's mother was from South Carolina. Her father was from Tennessee. I speculate she married Columbus in Haywood County but it could have been in Tennessee. They were farmers; they rented their farm - the 1900 census refers to it as "Farm Schedule 56" but I don't yet know what this means. I'd appreciate any information or suggestions on where to go now.
