I am interested if there are any records pertaining to the Schenck family which lived in Canton, NC in the 1920's, 30's, & 40's (possibly earlier also). There were several brothers some of whom were named Adrian, Joseph, Samuel, & possibly others. I believe all the brothers were stonemasons. Adrian married a Cathey (surname) and had several children, among them Adrian Sereno Schenck, Joseph Samuel Schenck, Anna Belle Schenck, and others. Any help you could provide me would be appreciated.

David Schenck

Thanks for the time you put into cataloging the Haywood County cemeteries. I
stumbled over your page while I was doing a some genealogical research. My
father (William Rathbone), his parents (Florence and Harrison Rathbone) and
Florence's parents (Boss and Lucinda Sutton) are all buried at Fines Creek
United Methodist Church. To see the flags waving beside my father and my
uncle Lewis Rathbone's names caused my eyes to mist over.
Again, thanks for
the hard work. It does touch people.

My 3rd great grandfather, William Green, lived on McDowell's Branch on the West side of the Pigeon River. I think his farm was a little north of present highway 209. He did own land as far south as Richland Creek at one time.
I'm fairly sure he was living alone at the time of his death in 1837. His wife and children had all moved to Georgia.
Are there any old abandoned cemeteries in the area that I described
in the paragraph above?
It's such a shame that he was left alone in his old age and then probably lies buried in an unmarked grave in an unknown cemetery.
Any help in locating his grave would be most appreciated.

Hello,
I am searching for cemetery, marriage, death records for John F. Spakes,
often found as Speaks. He was born March 1826, possibly KY.
He is
residing with his 2nd wife, Martha J., in the 1900 census in Beaver Dam
Twp., Haywood Co., NC.
His first wife appears to have been Mary Ann.
Prior to
living in Haywood Co., they were in Rowan Co., NC.
Children's names may have
been William Thomas; Margaret; Mary F.; Flora E.; and Allison.
John F.
apparently dies after 1900 as he is not listed in the 1910 census.
Will appreciate any resource data you have that would help me. If you are
able to look at court house records, please let me know.
Thank you.

Members of my PEARSON line have in the 19th Century resided for a time in
one or more of the following counties: Oconee, Pickens, Newberry,
Spartanburg, Greenville and Old Pendleton District in SC; Macon, Jackson and
Transylvania in NC, as well as many counties in north Georgia.
I have traced this Pearson family as far back as my gg grandfather, Evan
Pearson, (c1795-c1854); my g grandfather, Phillip Marion Pearson,
(1832-1921); my grandfather, Walter Augustus Pearson, (1860-1954); my
father, Denzil Poynor Pearson, (1888-1967); and myself, James A. Pearson,
(1931-). Evan Pearson remains an enigma for me. He was a Baptist preacher,
an evangelist, frequently away from home long periods of time on circuit
rides of local Baptist churches across north Georgia. He owned a small farm,
had a sickly wife who died c1834, four children, four slaves and he made
frequent investments in unimproved real property.
The 1850 Census in Gordon County, GA says Evan is 55, born in GA, no wife
shown, but 4 children: Rebecca, age 26 (c1824); Elizabeth, 20 (c1830);
Albert 20 (c1830) and Phillip Marion 19 (1832) my g grandfather. Evan
PEARSON died c1854. DOD and cemetery unknown. The 3 other children are not
found again after 1850 Census.
I know very little about Moses Pearson (c1796-unk). He was in the 1820
Habersham County Federal Census with a wife. He was in the 1830 Census, same
county, with a wife & 2 children. Evan & Moses were living close to each
other, although no relationship has yet been established. The first child of
Moses, a boy, born c1825, was named Evan.
Does any of this ring a bell? Any comments and/or suggestions welcome.

Hi,
I am helping a candidate for the UDC collect proof of a death of an ancestor. Her submission of an obit was rejected due to lack of the obit including the entire newspaper page.
Mary Lynn Holcombe Shore is in need of proof that Bessie Myrtle Shore died 16 August 1916. The Haywood County Library is missing the newspaper copies of the Mountaineer for the year 1916 so they cannot provide the missing page.
Is there a cemetery survey listing the gravesites where we may get the dates on the tombstone or may we obtain a death certificate? I could order an uncertified death certificate if those are available. The Haywood County website stated that many records were destroyed during a move in the 1930's.
Any advice you have will be most appreciated.

I am also looking for her illegitimate son, William Estes Smith, who was born in April 1880...I would love to find him and again have had no luck. Sure do hope to hear from someone soon.

My great-great-aunt Emaline Pope Dagenhart and her daughter Dora Dagenhart
(Fox) were left in Haywood County by Jacob Dagenhart.
Emaline had given birth to Dora while Jacob was away at war.
Dora was born
May 1865.
Hugh Fox was Dora's father.
She was born in Alexander County.
The family headed west and Jacob left Emaline and Dora with Catherine Pope
Miller in the Beaverdam section of Haywood County where they were living in 1870.
In 1880 Emaline and Dora were living with George and Minerva Christopher
Goodson in the same area. Minerva was Emalines niece, a daughter of Anna Pope
Christopher.
I believe that Dora married a man whose surname was Earley
about 1881 or 1882.
I found Dora Earley in the 1900 cesnsus in Asheville, Buncombe County, NC. She was a widow with six children.
In 1910 she had
returned to Haywood County, NC and was running a boarding house. Her daughter

death certificate is on file?

Dear Friends,
Greetings from Burleson, Texas!

following from Ancestry.com:
Eli Harrell, NC, Haywood County Regiment, Sixteenth Company, 1812, NC
1812-1814 Muster Rolls
I am wondering if this is the same Eli that I wrote about in a recent
posting. It is as follows.
I will appreciate any help you can give me.
Norman Harrell
Burleson, Tx
Dear Fellow Harrell Family Researchers,
My research so far has been able to put some of the pieces of the Harrell
puzzle together, but I need your help to make it more complete.
PUZZLE NUMBER ONE. My earliest ancestor so far is Eli Harrell. I found him
in the 1850 Census for Poinsett Co., Mitchell Twp, Ark. as being born in NC
and 72 years old. This would mark his birth as 1777 or 1778. His wife,
Cherry, or perhaps Cherey, is also listed in the same census as being 65
years old and as being born in Va. This would make her birth year as 1784 or
1785. I do not know her maiden name yet. As we are used to by now, there are
four variant spellings: Harrell, Harrill, Harrel, Harell on the same page in
the 1850 Census for Poinsett Co. After 1880 most of the family seem to
settle on "Harrell" spelling.
I wish I could find out more about Eli in NC. Some colleagues think he came
from Edgecombe, Chowan or Bertie counties. A quick survey has not lined up
my Eli with any I have noticed in NC resources. Who were Eli's parents? How
about Cherry? In the 1860 Census for Independence Co., Black River Twp, Eli
is not listed but Cherry is still living with her son, John G. However, she
is listed as being 70 years old instead of 75, if the 1850 Census number is
correct. Have you run across them in your research? Was Eli a shortened
version of Elisha? I have not found their grave sites yet. Have you seen
them listed anywhere?
PUZZLE NUMBER TWO. Eli (#1) and Cherry were living in the same household as
his son, John G in the 1850 Census for Poinsett Co., Mitchell Twp. John G is
listed as being born in NC and was 23 years old, making his birth year as
1826 or 1827. His wife is Martha Rebecca, 19 years old and as being born in
Alabama. (John G is listed as J.G. in the 1850 Census and as John G. in the
1860 Census for Independence Co., Black River Twp, Ark.) (Martha is listed
as Martha in the 1850, 1860 and 1900 Census, as M.R. in the 1870 Census and
as Martha R. in the 1880 Census. Also, in the 1880 Census her birth state is
listed as Tennessee instead of Alabama.)
The question is how many children did Eli and Cherry have? Just John G?
Because the same 1850 Census for Poinsett Co., Mitchell Twp, Ark. lists
other Harrell families living as neighbors of John G, Martha, Eli and
Cherry, it may be that David and Eli (#2) were also brothers of John G.
There is some evidence that Milton P ( or perhaps "I") is another brother as
well as Jethro Harrell, but more on him below.
It seems evident that the Harrells chose wives as they headed west to
Arkansas. Eli (#1) married Cherry from Virginia, David married Elizabeth
from NC, Eli (#2) married Martha C. from Georgia and John G. married Martha in
either Alabama or Tennessee. Do you have any evidences of these marriages?
PUZZLE NUMBER THREE. There is a mystery concerning my great grandfather, Eli
L Harrell, the son of John G. and Martha R. Harrell. In the 1880 Census for
Cross Co., Ark, he is listed as being in Sharp Co. (a nearby county to
Poinsett Co.), being 22 years old, living with Robert Wooldridge and his
wife, Mary P. Crouch (or Couch). Eli is designated as a nephew. But I cannot
figure out if Eli is the direct nephew of Robert or of Mary P. Crouch. Mary P.
came from Alabama as did Martha R. (according to the 1850 Census for Poinsett
Co.). Does anyone have any information that will help me solve this mystery?
PUZZLE NUMBER FOUR. Nan Harrell Snider wrote an article about Joseph Wyatt
Harrell in the book entitled "History and Families of Poinsett County,
Arkansas". In this article Mrs. Snider wrote that Jethro (Jefro) Harrell was
Joseph Wyatt's father and was born about 1815 in the Carolinas. Mrs. Snider
continues to say that Joseph Wyatt Harrell lived with David Harrell (his
uncle, we presume) in 1865 (according to the Poinsett Co. tax records). In
the 1870 Census for Cross Co., Joseph Wyatt is living with another uncle,
Eli (#2). If this is correct, then it means that if Eli (#2), the son of Eli
and Cherry, was Joseph Wyatt's uncle, then Jethro (his father) must also be
the son of Eli and Cherry and the brother to David, Eli (#2) and John G.
Does that make any sense? Can anyone help me to verify this claim?
PUZZLE NUMBER FIVE. Mrs. Snider, who has done some excellent work on the
Harrell family and who is the author of "A Proud Heritage: The Harrell
Family", mentions in a message board e-mail that Jethro Harrell was a half
brother to John Harrell and a cousin to a Tom Harrell. Does anyone know
anything about this John and this Tom? Has anyone made the connection
between these families?
Well, I have quite a bit more about the third, fourth and following
generations of Eli and Cherry Harrell, but I will develop these lines a bit
more before sharing them with you. I am hoping some of you will help me to
fill in some of the missing blanks for the five puzzles I have presented to
you.

First, let me tell you how much I have enjoyed perusing the Haywood Co. web site.
I am trying to locate a will or estate papers on Elisha PHILLIPS who d. 29 May 1891 and lived most of his life in Haywood Co. He was almost a hundred yrs. old when he died and left 15 children, I believe.
We are trying to prove that one of his children was Lucinda PHILLIPS ROBERTSON (md. Andrew). Elisha had several wives; Lucinda's mother was Clarissa EVANS; a later wife was Nancy HALL.
Can you tell me where the wills are for the county or even the name of someone who would do a lookup on it for me? Thank you so much for your time and help.

I am searching for the parents and siblings of my Great-Grandfather, Thomas A. Bell born 1822/1827 in NC died in 1893 in Cherokee County NC. I understand that Cherokee County was part or Haywood County in the 1820 time frame.
Are there birth records for that time period?
Is there a Haywood County census for 1820 and 1830? If so could I possibly buy a copy of any 1820 -1830 Bell birth records and census entrys.
We know that Thomas A, Bell was a Methodist Minister and lived in the household of Thomas J. Williams in Gilmer County GA in the 1850 census.
We believe that Thomas A. Bells mothers name was Anna Beall or Bell and that she married Thomas J. Williams in 1843 in Murry County GA.
All the census records 1850, 1860, and 1870 show his birthplace as NC. He married Artimissa McFarland of Habersham County GA in July 1851 and moved back to Cherokee County prior to the 1880 census.
Any help greatly appreciated.
