Death Takes Howell, 91, in Haywood


WAYNESVILLE--Dec. 10--Asbury Howell, 91, of Waynesville, died Sunday at 9:55 p.m.in a Waynesville hospital after a long illness.

A member of one of Haywood County's oldest families, he was a retired farmer and a member of the Board of County Commissioners.

Howell was the son of the late Mark and Elizabeth McGee Howell. His first wife, Mrs. Lou Garrett Howell, died in 1939. His second wife, Mrs. Carmel Harris Howell, survives.

Surviving, in addition to the widow, are five daughters, Mrs. J. T. DeFrazio of Charlotte, Mrs. B. D. Medford, Mrs. John West, Sr., and Mrs. Will Corzine of Waynesville, and Mrs. Bernard Dillinger of Miami, Fla.

Also, four sons, Garrett, Mark, David, and Joe of Waynesville: two brothers, D. A. Howell of Waynesville and Horace Howell of Asheville: four sisters, Mrs. M. C. Allison of Waynesville, Mrs. Cenia Williams of Knowville, Tenn., Mrs. Herman Palmer of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. M. C. Blaylock of Canton: 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Garrett Funeral Home. The Rev. T. E. Robbinette and the Rev. O. J. Beck will officiate and burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Eugene, Jack, Don, Charles, and Gerald Howell, Dick and Tom Medford, and Joe DeFrazio.
