National Allison (Allanson) Family Association
Founded October 19, 1996, Brevard, North Carolina.
The National Allison (Allanson) Family Association was founded for all
descendants of the immigrant Thomas Allanson/Allison, Lord of Christian Temple
Manor (1639-1684), a Gentleman of London, England and Charles County, Maryland.
The name of the organization reflects both the ancient and contemporary
spelling of the surname.
The old English family was transplanted in the New World in 1658 when Thomas
immigrated to the Province of Maryland in 1658. In 1659 he was granted a
Lordship with Court Baron. The site of his estate, Christian Temple Manor, is
preserved within a Maryland state park today where a large stone and bronze
monument marks the site of the family's first home in the New World.
The family remained in Maryland until the American Revolution. During the
closing years of the war a huge incremental movement began in 1778 and
continued on into the first years of the 1800's. Over 60 Maryland born Allisons
resettled together in the remote North Carolina mountains at the tiny outpost
of civilization that became today's Old Fort in McDowell County. From there
family members moved westerly, forming populations in most of the western
counties of the state, including Burke, McDowell, Buncombe, Henderson,
Transylvania, Haywood, Jackson, and Macon counties, as well as several Cherokee
branches of the family on the Qualla Boundary.
The on-going work of the organization includes publishing "The Allison Family
Voice," a large quarterly magazine loaded with the past and present of the
family, and the National Allison Family Reunion, a huge heritage event held
each October at Brevard College, Brevard, North Carolina.
The reunion draws hundreds of family members from up to 40 states for a weekend
of history and heritage featuring an exciting line-up of live heritage
entertainment, family history workshops and seminars, a historical program,
family history displays and exhibits drawn from the last 500 years of the
family's documented history, and much more.
