Private John Allen

Resided in Caswell Co. and was a trader before enlistment at age 25 on 24 Apr 1861.  POAF* until wounded at Chancellorsville VA 1-3 May 1863. Rejoined the company prior to 1-5 July 1863 when he was wounded in the left foot and captured at Gettysburg. Left leg amputated and transferred to City Point VA. Hospitalized at Chester PA until paroled and transferred to City Point VA where he was received 23 Sept 1863 for exchange. Reported absent wounded until retired to the Invalid Corps on 30 Aug 1864. [brother of William]

Private William Allen Resident of CC and a trader before enlisting at age 21 on 24 Apr 1861. POAF until he was reported in the hands of the enemy on a company muster roll dated May-June, 1864. Records of the Federal Provost Marshal do not substantiate the report of his capture. Reported in hospital at Lynchburg VA on company muster roll dated July-August 1864. Rejoined the company in Sept-Oct 1864. Capture on the South Side Railroad, VA, 2 Apr 1865. Confined at Pt. Lookout MD until released on 23 Jun 1865 after taking OA. [brother of John]
Private Adolphus Atkinson

Silversmith, enlisted at 17 on 24 Apr 1861.Wounded andcaptured at Gettysburg, 1863. Hospitalized at Chester, PA until paroled and transferred in August 1863 to City Point VA, where he was received 20 Aug 1863 for exchange. Reported absent wounded through Oct 1864. He returned to Milton and was a silversmith there. [By 1870, owing to the reduced circumstances of citizens of Milton and lack of demand for silversmiths, he was employed in a tobacco factory in Milton.]

Private Augustus Atkinson Resident of Caswell; enlisted at 21 on 24 Apr 1861. POAF until transferred to the Signal Corps on 1 Apr 1862. 
Corporal George W. Brandon

Resided in VA and enlisted in CC at age 18 on 17 July 1861. MI as Private, promoted to Corporal on 1 Apr 1863. POAF until wounded & captured at Gettysburg 1 July 1863. Hosp. at Chester PA where he died 26 Aug 1865.

1st Lt. William T. Brandon

Resided in VA and was a farmer before enlistment in CC at 22 on 24 Apr 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant on 1 Jan. 1863. Elected 2nd Lt. on 5 Mar 1863 and promoted to 1st Lt. on 1 June 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded and captured at Gettysburg 1-5 July 1863. Died on or about 9 July 1863 of wounds received at Gettysburg. Place of death not reported.

Private John T. Brooks

Resident of Caswell and a student at enlistment at age 17, 24 Apr 1861. POAF through 1864, though reported on detail as a courier during much of this time.

Corporal Angus J. Burch Resident of Caswell Co and a mechanic prior to enlistment at age 21, 21 Apr 1861. MI as Private and promoted to Corporal in Sept-Oct, 1864. POAF until paroled at Appomattox Cthse VA, 9 Apr 1865.
Private Yancey Chance

Born in CC where he was a teamster or mechanic prior to enlistment at age 17 on 24 Apr 1861. POAF until he was discharged on 24 July 1862 by reason of being underage. [May have served later in Company B, 59th Regt NC Troops (4th Regt N.C. Cavalry).]

2nd Lt. William B. Chandler

Farmer in CC before enlisting at age 21 on 24 Apr 1861. Mustered in as Private. POAF until wounded and captured at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. Confined at Washington DC until transferred to City Point VA, where he was received 13 May 1863, for exchange. Rejoined the company in July-August, 1863, and was elected 2nd Lt. on 24 Oct 1863. POAF until captured at or near Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. Confined at Fort Delaware where he arrived 12 Mar 1865. Released 16 June 1865, after taking OA.

2nd Lt. Champion T. N. Davis

Mechanic and resident of CC before enlisting in CC at age 33, 24 Apr 1861. Mustered in as Private and elected 2nd Lt. on 26 Apr 1862. POAF until he resigned on 9 Feb 1863 by reason of "exema." Resignation accepted 24 Feb 1863. Capt. Thomas Clancy Evans--lawyer, enlisted at age 21 in Caswell Co. on 24 Apr 1861. Mustered in as private and promoted to Corporal on 19 Aug 1861. Reduced to ranks on 26 Apr 1862 and was discharged on 28 May 1862, after being appointed Drillmaster. Elected Captain on 9 Aug 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the mouth and neck at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA, in May 1864.Hospitalized at Richmond, VA, 23 May 1864 and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Courthouse VA 9 Apr 1865. [His father, C.N.B. [Charles Napoleon Bonaparte] Evans was editor of The Milton Chronicle.]

Sergeant William T. Farley

Lived in CC and a mechanic before enlistment in CC on 24 Apr 1861 at age 21. MI as Private, promoted to Corporal 1 Jan 1863. POAF until wounded at Gettysburg 1-3 July 1863. Captured at Falling Waters, WV, 14 July 1863. Confined at Point Lookout, MD, until paroled and transferred to City Point, VA for exchanged. Rejoined the company in May-June 1864 and POAF until paroled at Appomattox Cthse, VA, on 9 Apr 1865.

3rd Lt. Jasper Fleming

Resided in Caswell Co. [Milton] where he enlisted at age 27. Elected 3rd Lt. on 24 Apr 1861. Appointed Adjutant on 3 Jun 1861 and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.

2nd Lt. Eustace Hunt

A farmer prior to enlistment at age 23 in Caswell Co. Elected 2nd Lt., 24 Apr 1861. Present or accounted for until he resigned on 5 July 1861. [brother of Leonard Hunt]

Maj. Leonard Hunt

Druggist. Enlisted 1862 at age 25. Elected 1st Lt. 24 Apr 1861 and Capt. on 26 Apr 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Gaines Mill, VA on or about 27 June 1862. Returned to duty prior to 1 Nov 1862. Present or accounted for until he resigned on 2 June 1863 upon appointment as Major on the staff of Major General William D. Pender. Served as mayor of Milton about 27 years, died at 80 years of age. Buried near Semora in the Thornton cemetery. Married Signora Thornton, lived in Milton at Fairview. [brother of Eustace Hunt]

Private Willie Kisort [Cozart]

Born in Orange Co., resided CC, where he was a carpenter or mechanic prior to enlistment at age 34 on 24 Apr 1861. POAF until discharged on 24 July 1862, under the provisions of the Conscript Act.

Private David Longwell

Born in Baltimore, MD, and resided in CC where he was a tailor before enlisting in Caswell County at age 32 on 24 Apr 1861. POAF until discharged on 21 July 1862 under the provisions of the Conscript Act.

Capt. James T. Mitchell

A mechanic in CC prior to enlistment at age 33. Elected Captain on 24 Apr 1861. Present or accounted for until he was defeated for reelection when the regiment was reorganized on 26 Apr 1862. Later served as Captain of Company B, 59th Regt, NC Troops (4th Regt, N.C. Cavalry).

Private John C. Palmer

Born in CC and resided in Wake Co. when he enlisted at 17 on 27 May 1861. He was a printer's helper in Raleigh prior to enlistment. POAF until transferred to Co. G, 53rd Regt. N.C. Troops, 5 Apr 1862.

Private Armistead H. Patterson

Resided in CC and a student at enlistment at age 20 on 24 Apr 1861. MI as Private & promoted to Corporal 24 Sept 1861. Reduced to ranks in Nov-Dec 1861. Discharged on or about 14 Aug 1862 after providing a substitute. Later served in Capt. Pincik's Co., Virginia Light Artillery.

Private David Patterson, Jr.

Born at Petersburg, VA. and lived in CC where he was a clerk. Enlisted at age 22 on 24 Aug 1861. POAF until killed at Gaines Mill on 27 June 1862. Buried at Milton. Funeral service preached on November 11, 1862 at the same time as that of his little brother who had died earlier from diphtheria.

Private George Piper

Lived in CC where he enlisted at 17 on 28 June 1861. POAF until discharged on or about 30 Sept 1862, under provisions of the Conscript Act. (May have served later in Company I, 45th Regt N.C. Troops.)

Private Robert Piper

Born in Orange Co, lived in CC where he was a mason by trade before enlisting in CC at age 25 on 24 Apr 1861. POAF until killed at Gaines Mill VA 27 June 1862.

1st Lt. John P. Rainey

One of three brothers in Milton Blues. Farmer, enlisted in Caswell Co. at age 18, 24 Apr 1861. Mustered in as Private. POAF until wounded at Sharpsburg, MD, 17 Sept 1862. Returned to duty prior to 1 Nov 1862 and he was promoted to Corporal on 1 Apr 1863. POAF until wounded in the forearm and captured at Chancellorsville, VA, 3 May 1863. Hospitalized at Washington DC until transferred to Old Capitol Prison Wahsington 25 June1863. Paroled and transferred to City Point VA where he was received 30 Jun 1863 for exchange. Rejoined the company in July-August 1863 and was appointed 1st Lt. 24 Oct 1863. POAF until paroled at Appomattox Cthse Va 9 Apr 1865. Returned to his home at Semora and spent the rest of his life there.

Capt. William W. Rainey

Farmer, enlisted at age 22, on 24 Apr 1861. One of three brothers who went to war. Mustered in as corporal and promoted to Sergeant on 24 Sept 1861. Reduced to ranks on 26 Apr 1862, but was reappointed sergeant on 1 Aug 1862. Appointed Color Sergeant in November-December, 1862, and was elected 2nd Lt. 14 Feb 1863. Promoted to Capt. on 1 June, 1863. Present and accounted for until wounded and captured at Gettysburg 1-5 July, 1863. Died 9 July 1863 of wounds. Place of death not reported.

1st Sgt. Stephen Dodson Richmond

Farmer, enlisted at age 21 on 24 Apr 1861. MI as Sergeant and promoted to 1st Sergeant on 13 July 1861. POAF until appointed Adjutant and transferred to the Field and Staff, 49th Regt. N.C. Troops on or about 12 Apr 1862. Died from typhoid 10 May 1862 and is buried in Milton cemetery. A first cousin of General Stephen Dodson Ramseur.

John Baptist Smith

A student, enlisted at 17. Born at Hycotee, Caswell Co., on September 19, 1843, he enlisted as a private with the Milton Blues on April 15, 1861. By mid-July he was a corporal and on the first of December promoted to sergeant. On April 1 1862 he was transferred to the Signal Corps.

Edward Roe Stamps

Son of Dr. William Lipscomb Stamps, a student at Hampden-Sydney College, enlisted at age 17 on 24 Apr 1861. His sister, Mary, who was Mrs. F.S. Royster, wrote when she was 84 years old, "I often think of my mother during the war, what she had to go through. My father volunteered and was a surgeon in Jackson's army. My brother Edward Roe, who was a school, left before he was of age, volunteered, was in the army, was taken prisoner at Point Lookout and was a prisoner for 18 months. My mother who loved to play so, did not touch the piano the whole time he was gone. My father lost everything he had but his land." POAF in Milton Blues until transferred to Capt Pencik's Co. Va. Light Artillery, 14 May 1862.

Private Farmville R. Stigall Enlisted in CC on 25 Aug 1864 for the war. POAF until paroled at Appomattox Cthse VA on 9 Apr 1865.
Sergeant Abner R. Terry

Born in CC where he was an architect or mechanic prior to enlisting in Caswell Co. at age 31 on 24 Apr 1861. MI as Sergeant. POAF until discharged at Camp Ruffin VA 8 Sept 1861 by reason of  "disability."

Sergeant Joseph D. Terry

Resident of CC and a mechanic before enlisting in CC at age 18 on 24 Apr 1861. MI as Private, promoted to Corporal on 24 Sept 1861, promoted to Sergeant on 26 Apr 1862. POAF until killed at Gaines' Mill VA 27 June 1862.

Private John L. Watkins

Resided in CC and a physician before enlisting in CC at age 21 on 24 Apr 1861. POAF until discharged on 14 June 1862 after providing a substitute.

John B. Yarbrough

Resided in CC and a mechanic prior to enlistment at age 20 on 24 Apr 1861. MI as Private, promoted to Sergeant on 1 Aug 1862. POAF until captured at Gettysburg 1-4 July 1863. POAF until wounded in the right leg and captured at Gettysburg. Hospitalized at David's Island, NY Harbor until paroled and transferred to City Point VA where he was received 16 Sept 1863, for exchange. Reduced to ranks March-April 1864, and was reported absent wounded until retired to the Invalid Corps on 25 Nov 1864. (Mary Satterfield's grandfather)--a mechanic, enlisted at 20. Roll of honor man, promoted to sergeant, wounded at Gettysburg, captured, hospitalized at David's Island in New York harbor. Paroled and exchanged in New York harbor.
