Elon Magnolia Cemetery of Elon, North Carolina
Betsy Watson Wall, a resident of the Town of Elon has recently
recorded the Elon Magnolia Cemetery of Elon, North Carolina located beside
Oak Avenue/W. Front St.

"Much history can be lost without recordings of cemeteries and this should
not be allowed to happen. This project has been a labor of love for history
and family", said Wall. She completed the survey as a personal project not
connected to the Town or any organization.

A printed copy has been given to May Memorial Library in Burlington.
Persons tracing family history for genealogical purposes will find this
survey especially helpful. The Magnolia cemetery has not been completely
recorded since the 1930s according to library records. The cemetery is
well-kept and the monuments are in good condition. The Town of Elon owns
the cemetery and a lighted American flag is present with a well-built brick
name sign.

The recording of inscriptions was done on-site and the resulting list is in
alphabetical order for research ease. A walk of the entire cemetery, down
the narrow roads and under the magnolia trees, takes only a short time.

The survey is a complete report of the entire cemetery which was built in
1900 according to tax records. However, the first burial is listed as 1891.
Over 670 entries are recorded. However, the trend for funeral preplanning
arrangements and memorial markers for burials that have been made elsewhere
makes a different number of actual interments.
