Shelley Karen Dougherty
Peacefully, surrounded by her family Shelley passed away at home in Bonny River late afternoon Friday, April 8-2011 following a lengthy struggle with breast cancer. Shelley was the loving wife of Jeffrey A Taylor of Bonny River and loving mother of Ashton (7 yrs). Shelley was born to Harvey and Eleanor (Craig) Dougherty of Bonny River NB and the younger sister of Stephanie Murphy of Saint John NB. Shelley graduated from high school in Lindsay, Ontario and attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NASCAD) in Halifax where she studied art and design. After graduating from NASCAD Shelley was awarded the only Canadian spot for an artists in residence fellowship program in Provincetown, Massachusetts where she enjoyed creating her beloved art. Returning to Canada she attended York University in Toronto where she received her Masters Degree in Fine Arts. Shelley continued to practice her art with fellow artists in both Canada and the US and at home whenever she was inspired, receiving numerous grants, awards and having some of her work featured in prominent art magazines. Her art, her family and her son were her passions. Later Shelley attended trades school and joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters union Saint John NB local 213. She was the first woman welder to join the union in the province of New Brunswick. Shelley worked on many construction projects in and around the city of Saint John as well as in the US. Well respected in both her fields of art and welding she also had a passion for toiling around in her flower gardens, was a beautiful cook and could do just about anything she put her mind to. Shelley had many, many talents all the while remaining a truly modest person who always put others first. Shelley will be greatly missed by her family, friends, fellow union brothers and sisters, and most especially her little boy whom she loved so dearly.

Shelley’s wishes were to have a summer celebration memorial when her friends and family from away with their children could travel to Bonny River and join in a tribute to Shelley’s life on her beloved property overlooking the Magaguadavic River surrounded by her gardens and flowers. All friends, family, co-workers and fellow union brothers and sisters are invited to attend Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 1:00pm, 960 Rte 770 Bonny River NB.

Internment will be held at the Bonny River/Second Falls Baptist Cemetery on Sunday, April 17th at 2:00 pm for family and friends who wish to attend the short ceremony followed by an open house drop in gathering at Shelley’s home, 960 rte 770 Bonny River.

Shelley requests no flowers only donations (financial or time) to the Charlotte County Cancer Society who were so supportive to her needs and that of her family. The family on Shelley’s behalf would like to send out heartfelt thanks to the team of extra mural ladies who made Shelley’s time enjoyable and a very special thanks to Rosalie Skodje who’s loving care, companionship and humor gave her such comfort.
