SYLVESTER HOOPER
The funeral of Sylvester Hooper, Widower of the late Bessie Hooper, was held Aug. 1, 1996 at the Sea View Full Gospel Church, Back Bay.  The Church Bell was tolled in honor and remembrances of Dad at the beginning of the service as he performed the duties of church bellringer and senior usher.  Rev. Gordon Cooke opened in prayer, followed by Mrs. Betty McCarty singing Gathering Flowers for the Master's Bouquet.  The eulogy was given by Rev. Donald McCarty, mentioning the change Christ made in Dad's life and how rich in God Dad and Mom's last 20 years of marriage was.   He also spoke about how much they enjoyed attending church together and sharing the word of God.  The scripture of Psalms 23 was recited by the congregation.  Rev. Donald McCarty led in prayer for the family at this time.   Following this Mrs. Betty McCarty rendered her second piece, Silver Saints, a favorite of Dad's. By request of Harvey, two pieces, Beyond the Sunset and I Dreamed About Mamma Last Night were played, which was fitting as it was only eight days since Mom's funeral. The message was given by Rev.Gordon Cooke, mentioning the heritage we have in God and following in His path. Harvey, Charles, Paul, Kenny, Phillip and Rodney honored Dad by performing the service of pallbearers.  Interment took place in the St. George Rural Cemetery. The last year of their lives we often heard Dad remark, " I just wish we could go together."   We praise God that He saw fit to honor that prayer and desire, as we know the grave is not the end and we shall see them once again.   We do not mourn as those that have no hope.   PSALMS 42:1

Back Bay woman murdered in Ont.

by Barb Rayner-Staff Writer

Back Bay-A former Back Bay woman who was stabbed in her apartment in Hamilton, Ontario later died in hospital and her estranged husband has been charged with first degree murder.Media relations with the Hamilton Police, Sgt. David Smethurst, said that at 8:15pm on Oct. 8 the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Police were called to an apartment complex in the city and found 37-year-old Janice Wright collapsed on the front steps of the building suffering from several stab wounds. She was taken to the Henderson General Hospital where she died shortly after. When police went into the apartment, he said, they found 30- year- old John Ince of Hamilton who had been stabbed at least once in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. Several neighbours reported hearing and seeing some of these events, said Sgt. Smethurst, and a man was chased away from the scene by some of them. At 10:45pm that same day police went to a North End Hamilton home where they arrested Wright's estranged husband, Willis Walter Wright, 38, of Hamilton. It would appear, said Sgt. Smethurst, that Wright forced his way into the apartment and two of Mrs. Wright's sons aged eleven and six fled with no apparent physical injuries. Wright has been charged with two counts of first degree murder. He appeared in court on October 9 and has been remanded in custody.Sgt. smethurst said no date has been set yet for the preliminary hearing. He said that prior to his arrest Wright had been before the courts on a charge of assaulting his estranged wirfe and on the conditions under which he was released on bail was that he not communicate with his wife. Sgt. Smethurst said that on Oct. 9 police went back to search for the murder weapon but as of Friday nothing had been found and they are asking for assistance in locating it.

From the Saint Croix Courier, December 21, 1997

He was one of the best
Teacher's death a shock to community
by Barb Rayner, Courier Staff
ST. GEORGE--Fundy High School teacher Richard Ford touched the lives of hundreds of students and his unexpected death Sunday at the age of 49 has left a gap that can never be filled, said principal Blaine Hatt.
The head of the science department at the school, Ford was a senior staff member at Fundy having moved there when the school opened in 1975 after teaching at the old Eastern Charlotte Regional School.  A graduate of UNB, he had previously taught in Campobello and Canterbury.
As staff and students mourned, Hatt said the suddenness and unexpectedness of Ford's death had shoced them all.
"He will be missed.  He was a valued member of the administrative team at the school one of the most senior members of the staff.  He was also valued because of his longstanding association with the community.
Ford had been a very effective head of the science department for a number of years, said Hatt, and this year had taken on the combined position of head of math and science.
"In terms of excellence in the classroom he had to be one of the most outstanding teachers of science, particularly biology, in New Brunswick.  He was a member of the Atlantic Provinces Education Council sub-committee on science and has been involved in writing the provincial exam in biology."
That excellence was recognized when Ford received the Prime Minister of Canada's award of excellence in teaching math, science and technology.  He took the money he had received from that award and put it into a GIC to establish a scholarship at Fundy, said Hatt.  The excellence in science award is now presented annually at graduation.
"His primary concern in education was for the welfare and educational advancement of students.  He was considered by many of us to be a master teacher.
"He was highly compentent, a tremendous motivator, a firm but kind disciplinarian who was well respected by students and staff alike.  He is going to leave a gap on our staff that just cannot be filled."
Ford was also a member of the emergency team at Fundy giving medical assistance when needed together with fellow science teacher Jim Proctor.
The two also put together a graduation slide show every year.  After showing the slides during the ceremonies, Ford would also go to Safe Grad that night and do a repeat performance.  He also started a dart club at the school which was held every noon hour.
"He was incredibly supportive of his own children as well as anyone and everyone else.  He is just going to be greatly missed and it will be a mammoth task to try to find someone as competent to complete his courses."
Outside his school activities, Ford was also very involved in the community.  He had been a church warden at St. Mark's Anglican Church, St. George for five years and was chair of the vestry's property and maintenance committee.
A former Sunday school teacher, he also directed the church choir.  Music formed an important part of Ford's life and he had been a member of the Run of the Mill singers for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, and three children, David, Anna and Andrew, as well as one brother, William in Echo Bay, BC.
The funeral will take place at St. Mark's on Wednesday at 2 pm.
