Rueben Eastency, aged 19 years, son of Chas. Eastency,
and Willie Beaney, aged 9 years, son of Wm. Beaney,
were drown on Friday , 29th ult, while bathing in the river at Lee
Settlement. Mr. Eastency, who was considered an excellent swimmer,
started with the boy on his back, to swim out to a sand bar about
twenty-five yards from the shore, and, when a few feet from the bar,
they both sank. The sad accident was witnessed by two lads from the
shore, who were in bathing with them, but were unable to render their
comrades any assistance. It is supposed that young Eastency was seized
with
cramps. The bodies were recovered in about ten feet of water,
a short distance from where they went down, about one and a half
hours after the accident. An inquest was held under the direction
Coroner Bogue and the jury rendered a verdict of accidental drowning.
