Community Program At St. George Observing V-E Day--Parade and Open-Air Service of Thanksgiving Held With Crowds Swarming About Post Office Square

St. George, May 14--Services of prayer and thanksgiving were held here on a community scale Tuesday, May 8, to commemorate V-E Day.  In the morning thanksgiving services were held in the various churches, and in the afternoon a very large crowd from the town and neighbouring districts, with soldiers and airmen from training centres nearby, assembled to watch a parade to the post office square at 3 o'clock and participate in the community service there.

The parade, which assembled at the high school, was led by the band of Utopia Training Centre, and in the line of march were members of the Canadian Legion, in command of Lt.-Col. C. Graham, the robed choirs of the United Baptist and St. Mark's Anglican churches, Mayor R. D. Smith and members of the town council, about 100 school children with their principal, F. T. Atkinson, and teachers, and the 1st St. George Troop of Boy Scouts led by Scoutmaster Stephen Campbell.

Rev. Hubert Doody presided at the community service and also delivered the address, in which he impressed the significance of the occasion especially upon the young people and children present.  The order of service was that prescribed by the Canadian Council of Churches for the occasion, including prayers by Rev. D. F. MacDormand of St. George, prayer and brief address by Mrs. Samuel MacRae of St. George, recitation of the litany led by Rev. M. A. Conley of L'Etete, and reading of Scripture by Rev. W. L. Randall of Pennfield, Glen Campbell, student pastor of the St. George Presbyterian Church, also participated.
