Laten we niet vergeten. Lest we forget.

Bij huis Laag Buurlo (dit huis) werd op 14 april 1945 één van de In house Laag Buurlo (this house)  on 14 April 1945 one of the

laatste gevechten geleverd voor de bevrijding van Nederland. last battles of World War II was fought for the Liberation of the Netherlands.

Lieutenant JW Reardon van de 1e Huzaren van de Canadese Pantserdivisie. Lieutenant J.W. Reardon of the First Hussars of the Canadian Armoured Rgt.

The brass plaque on the northern facade of the villa 'Low Buurlo' remembers two Canadian officers, Captain Sims and Lieutenant Reardon, who were killed at this place on Saturday 14 April 1945 .

Op 14 april 1945 waren officieren van het Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) rond twee uur in de middag bij elkaar in de serre van de villa voor een bevelsuitgifte. On 14 April 1945 officers of the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) around two o'clock in the afternoon met together in the veranda of the villa for a command issue. De gevechtsactie om in de vroege ochtend de Duitse weerstand bij De Tol te breken, was mislukt. The fighting action in the early morning to break up the German resistance at De Tol, had failed. The Canadians had lost two Sherman tanks and there were dead and wounded.

 Bij deze bespreking ging het waarschijnlijk om een plan voor een vervolgactie. This discussion was likely to develop a plan for a follow up. De bemanning van een Duits kanon op een tankonderstel ontdekte de Canadezen en begon de villa te beschieten. The crew of a German self propelled gun( a self propelled gun is a gun mounted on a tank chassis-J.R.) discovered the Canadians and started shelling the villa. Een granaat sloeg door de buitenmuur en verwondde beide officieren dodelijk. A shell hit the outer wall and deadly injured two officers .

Captain Sims landde met het RCR op Sicilië, de vuurdoop voor deze Canadese eenheid. Captain Sims landed with the RCR in Sicily, the baptism of fire for this Canadian unit. Hij sneuvelde als laatste officier van het Regiment, kort voor de bevrijding van Nederland. He was the last officer of the Regiment to be killed, shortly before the liberation of the Netherlands. Lieutenant Reardon van de 1st Hussars steunde op deze dag het RCR met zijn Shermantanks. Lieutenant Reardon of the 1st Hussars supported on this day the RCR with his Sherman tanks. Beide officieren zijn begraven op het Canadese oorlogskerkhof in Holten. Both officers are buried at the Canadian war cemetery in Holten.

Toon Buitenhuis, a witness to the action of April 14, 1945

This history was brought back to life by the Canadian veteran Tom Doucette, who in 1945, took part in combat in the battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment at Anklaar. Hij vertelde bij de 50-jarige herdenking in 1995 zijn gastgezin in Nijverdal over het sneuvelen van beide officieren. At the 45th year anniversary in 1990, he told his host family in Nijverdal, of the death of both officers. Zo kwam dit verhaal leden van het plaatselijk herdenkingscomité ter ore, die de heer Jerry Hulzebos uit Apeldoorn daarover hebben ingelicht. So this story became known to the members of the local commemoration committee, who informed Mr. Jerry Hulzebos of Apeldoorn. Met zijn medewerking zijn de voorbereidingen getroffen voor de oprichting van een monument bij villa Laag Buurlo. With his cooperation, preparations were made for the establishment of a monument to Laag Buurlo .

De plaquette is onthuld op 3 mei 2000 door Mrs Cynthia Sladen, de zuster van Captain Sims. The plaque was unveiled on May 3, 1995 by Mrs. Cynthia Sladen, the twin sister of Captain Sims. Bij de onthulling was de toenmalige compagniescommandant van Captain Sims in 1945, Colonel (retired) Strome Galloway, aanwezig. Captain Sims' company commander in 1945, Colonel Strome Galloway was present at the unveiling of the plaque. Daarnaast was de Apeldoorner Toon Buitenhuis aanwezig.Also present was Apeldoorner Toon Buitenhuis. Buitenhuis, toendertijd 25 jaar oud, heeft de Duitse aanval van zeer dichtbij meegemaakt. Buitenhuis, 25 years old at the time, saw the German attack up close. He was a farmhand on the estate and took care of the cattle. De bezetter begon de villa te beschieten. The Germans began shelling  the villa. Buitenhuis zag de granaat inslaan. Buitenhuis saw the shell hitting the villa. Hij rende de villa binnen om de Canadezen te waarschuwen, maar tevergeefs. He ran inside the villa to warn the Canadians, but in vain. Hij trof Sims en Reardon dood aan. He found Sims and Reardon dead. Toon Buitenhuis was sinds 1967 niet meer in de villa geweest. Toon Buitenhuis  had not been in the villa since 1967 . Met tranen in de ogen vertelde hij tijdens de onthulling het verhaal zoals het hem is bijgebleven: ‘Het huis is helemaal verbouwd, maar de plek kon ik moeiteloos terugvinden’ . Hij toonde de plaats waar de mannen zijn omgekomen: ‘Hier in de serre stond mijn bed. With tears in his eyes he told the story during the unveiling as he remembers: "The house is completely rebuilt, but I could easily find the place." He showed the place where the men were killed: 'Here in the conservatory stood my bed. Op de rand van het bed waren de officieren aan het overleggen.Both officers were sitting on the edge of my bed. Toen ik binnenkwam hoorde ik een geweldige knal en zag ik de mannen liggen. When I arrived I heard a huge bang and I saw the men. De granaat was dwars door de verwarming heen geslagen en buiten terecht gekomen zonder te ontploffen’. The shell pierced the central heating and ended up outside without exploding. "

De bewoners van villa Laag Buurlo dragen zorg voor de plaquette. The residents of Villa Low Buurlo will care for the plaque.

 

On April 14, 2008, the children of elementary school 'O.B.S. de Bundel' adopted the plaque on Villa Laag Buurlo.
