Carroll Hooper

St. George—It was with a sense of sadness that many relatives and friends learned of the death of Carroll Hooper, which occurred at the Fundy Hospital, Blacks Harbour April 14, following an illness of several weeks.

            Sixty four years of age, Carroll was born at St. George Jan. 16, 1924, a son of the late Earl W. and Mabel (Schofield) Hooper.

            He attended the St. George Superior High School.  For 36 years he was an employee of the New Brunswick Power Commission, retiring four years ago.

            During the years of the Second World War he served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army.

            He was a charter member of the St. George Rotary Club, and was a member of the local United Baptist Church.

            He was a keen fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed gardening.

            Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Milfred, Joseph, Paul and Lewis.

            Surviving are his wife, Moreen Elizabeth (Ralston) Hooper, a native of Surrey, England; three sons, Graham, St. George; Kenneth New Maryland, and David, Regina, Sask.; one daughter, (Theresa) Mrs. Michael Oliver, Richmond Hill, Ont.; four grandchildren and a great grandson, Bradley Campbell of Elmsville,

            Also surviving are five brothers, Donald, Saint John; Keith, Riviere-du-Loup, Que., Earl, Bridgewater, N.S., Jack, South Brookfield, N.S., and Richard, St. George; and five sisters, Mrs. Maurice Hanley (Thelma), Back Bay;  Mrs. Leo Deveau (Beatrice), Mascarene; Mrs. Kenneth Holmes (Emily), St. Stephen; Mrs. Guy Kinney (Annette), Leverville;  and Mrs. Fawney Mean (Leona) of Hartland; cousins and many nephews and nieces.

            The funeral service was held in the United Baptist Church, which was filled to capacity with family members, relatives and friends.

            The pastor, Rev. Jonathan P. Steeper conducted the service.

            The hymn How Great Thou Art was sung by the church choir, with Mrs. Elaine Craig the soloist.

            The choir led in the singing of the congregational hymns, Great is Thy Faithfulness and The Old Rugged Cross, Mrs. Elaine Gordon was the organist.

            Pallbearers were:  Byron Patterson, Lawrence Stewart, Ellison Clark, Marshall Stewart, Gerald Grearson and Donald Stewart.

            Interment was in the St. George Rural Cemetery.

            Beautiful floral tributes were received, and many donations were made to the various memorial funds in Carroll’s memory.
