Blacks Harbour Veterans

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: Pte. M.B. Bradford (Service #: 742702), member of 26th Bn. of the Canadian Infantry (New Brunswick Regiment), is buried at Sun Quarry Cemetery (Plot D, Grave 5) which is located 1.5 kilometres south-east of the village Cherisy, France. He was the son of Martin Byrne Bradford (1856-1917) & Lola Jane Barney (1866-1949).

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: Pte. G.J. Wilcox (Service #: 4063241), member of Canadian Infantry (New Brunswick Regiment), is buried at Blacks Harbour Community Cemetery in Blacks Harbour, NB. He was the son of Reuben Clifton Wilcox (1863-1931) & Sarah Jane Wilcox (1863-1951).

Flight Lt. John Allardyrce Allen, of Blacks Harbour, missing, having failed to return after a raid over Germany early in January. He was Captain of Lancaster bomber (DS 739) with a crew of six (F/O H.F. Doull, F/O K. Crawford, Sgt. J.A. Cobbett, Sgt. I.A. Dupuis, Sgt. W.R. Collier and WO2 J.E. Scott).

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: Fl. Lt. J. A. Allen (Service #: J/6643), pilot with the 432 Sqdn. of the Royal Canadian AirForce, is buried at Berlin 1939-1945 Cemetery (Plot 9, Section B, Grave 5) in Berlin, Germany. He was the son of David & Isobel Allen; husband of Honor Mary Allen, of Paddington, London.

He was the son of Venard Jarvis Noddin (1886-1974) & Winnifred C Kavaughn (1890-1922); husband of Mabel "Blanche" Noddin, of McAdam, NB.

Jesse Frederick Wilcox, Blacks Harbour, killed in action in France, August 13, first of his village to lose his life in present war.
