COGGON, ALLAN F. - Passed away peacefully after a brief illness with family at his side at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater Nova Scotia on December 24, 2006, age 87.

Born in Dartmouth Nova Scotia.

Loving husband of the late Margery.

Loving father of Christopher, Steve (Norma-Jean) and Jennifer.

From 1940-46 Allan served in the RCAF as a pilot, discharged as F/L after one tour in Burma.

Post-war he variously flew for KLM, Hollinger Ungava Transport in Labrador, and later established and ran the air service for Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario for 27 years.

Moving to Mahone Bay in 1990 and was a founding member of the Western Nova Scotia Aircrew Association and the Silver Dart Chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society.

The author of two books and a tireless advocate of our Canadian veterans legacy.

Allan will be sadly missed by many.

Visitation with Legion ceremony at Mahone Funeral Home, 32 Parish St. Mahone Bay Nova Scotia on Friday, December 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; funeral in St. James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay on Saturday December 30 at 2 p.m.

Interment at Upper Blue Rocks Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Allan's memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Notable Saultite Allan F. Coggon will be buried today in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia.

Coggon, pictured with a student aircraft at the Sault Ste. Marie airport, flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) throughout most of the Second World War.

He also authored the book Watch and Warn, which tells the story of thousands of Canadians who volunteered with the Canadian Air Detection Corps during the war.

These volunteer "spotters" would occupy observation posts and keep watch for enemy planes coming over the Atlantic or the Pacific.

Watch and Warn later became the basis for a documentary of the same name produced by War Amps CEO Cliff Chadderton.

The documentary features both the Sault Locks and Saultites who contributed to the local war effort.
