Flight Sergeant Horace David Baittle, R.C.A.F. (Service No.: R-79439), was listed missing after air operations over enemy territory on August 29, 1942. He was buried at Adegem Canadian War Cemetery which is located midway between Brugge (17 km) and Gent (26 km) on the N9 which connects the two towns in Belgium.

Flight Sergeant Baittle enlisted in the air force in May, 1941, and received his observer's wing at Mountain View, Ontario, in February 1942. He was assigned for special training in astronavigation at Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick, and was posted overseas in March, 1942. He was promoted to the rank of Flight Sergeant on July 31, 1942.

Born in Montreal in 1922, Flight Sergeant Baittle was the son of Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Baittle of 12 Park Place, Westmount. He graduated from West Hill High School and the religious school of the Shaar Hashomayim Congregation, where he was president of the junior congregation. He was an assistant cub master at the Y.M.H.A., and was an active member of the A.Z.A. and Canadian Young Judea. His brother, Lieutenant Brahm Baittle, served with the R.C.A.M.C.
