CONNORS, PATRICK WILLIAM "Pat"– Patrick W. Connors, production
manager of the Connors Brothers factory at Blacks Harbour, died at his home here
this afternoon, following a short illness. Mr. Connors had
been a lifelong resident of this community and was associated with his brother,
Lewis Connors, of Saint John, in establishing first a small fishing business and
later the fish canning plant at Blacks Harbour. Patrick Connors has been closely
identified with the development of this project through 40 years and has seen
the industry grow to one of the most important of its kind in Canada; shipping
is products to markets in many distant lands. He was one of the proprietors of
the business up to four years ago, when reorganization was effected and he was
appointed to the important position of production manager, which he has held
since that time.
Mr. Connors is survived by his widow and six daughters, the
Misses Alma and Margaret, at home; Miss Annie, residing the United States; Mrs.
Hall, of Fredericton; Mrs. Ted O’Brien, of Beaver Harbour; and Mrs. Grover
Bennett, of Blacks Harbour. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Robert Thompson, and

CONNORS, PATRICK WILLIAM – Blacks Harbour is mourning today
the death of its first citizen, P. W. Connors was laid to rest in the
village cemetery. Here where he was born and lived his life, he sleeps the last
long sleep. The funeral, which was attended by practically everybody in the
Harbour and a host from the surrounding country, was held from his home to the
Catholic Church where a solemn mass was celebrated by Rev. I. W. Holland. The
pal bearers were Grover Bennett, William Hall, Frank Connors, Charles Woodland,
John McDowell and Bernard Connors. Patrick W. Connors was born sixty four years
ago in Blacks Harbour, the son of James and Mrs. Connors. In his youth he
followed the fishing business. A man of tremendous energy he gave always of his
best to the great industry with which his name is linked and died practically in
the harness, having been ill only a few days. A pioneer in the canning of
sardines, together with his brother Lewis, he built the largest factory of its
kind in Canada and one of the largest in the world. A thorough knowledge of fish
gained in years of winning a livelihood from the deep, he was well prepared when
the time came to assume control of the production end of the business. A master
of detail, the possessor of a wonderful memory, the success of the firm was due,
in a great measure to the intensive attention he gave to that end of the
business where every item that entered into production must be given strict
attention. Known in the trade as the best judge of fish on the coast, he knew
the sardine from the time it left the deep until it was in the can ready for the
market. Honest in his dealings with his fellowman he was respected and popular
with his employers. In his home life he was an affectionate husband and a loving
father. The builder of a big business of which he was the largest stockholder
and director, the founder of a community where many live and enjoy happy homes,
Mr. Connors died with the knowledge that his work would endure and that his days
on earth had been fruitful ones. A widow, six daughters, Mrs. Grover Bennett,
Mrs. Edward O’Brien, Anna, Margaret, Mrs. W. I. Hall and Alma are left to
mourn. Mr. Connors also left two brothers, Lewis and Frank, one sister, Mrs.
Robert Thompson and two step sons, Daniel and John Thompson.

McLEAN, DONALD ALTON, Hon. Senator, Dr. – Senator Donald A.
McLean, chairman of the board of the Connors Bros. group of companies, died
early Monday in Fundy Hospital in his community of Blacks Harbour, Charlotte
County. He was 66, and had been seriously ill for several months with cancer.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon. Death came six weeks after Senator
McLean was honored at what has been described as the larges testimonial dinner
ever held in New Brunswick. In September, Prime Minister Trudeau and members of
his cabinet joined 3,500 person in honoring Senator McLean for his 45 years of
devoted work for the Liberal Party and his community, county, province and
country. Mr. Trudeau described him as "a man who pre-eminently showed how a
Canadian can use his talents and his freedom not only to help build the economy
and to build financial institutions and produce jobs but to help his fellow
man".
Donald Alton McLean was born on January 27, 1907, at Inverness, Cape
Breton, a son of the late Neil E. and Elizabeth (McKinnon) McLean and grew up on
a small farm at Whycocomagh, Cape Breton. He attended school there and in 1928

A. McLean. He became production manager in 1932, vice-president in 1956,
president and chief executive officer in 1969 and chairman of the board in 1970.
He maintained close connection with company affairs until illness prevented
participation in recent weeks. Throughout his residence in New Brunswick,
Senator McLean was closely involved with the work of the Liberal Party, first in
Charlotte County and then at the provincial and federal levels. He was the
immediate past president of the New Brunswick Liberal Association and a former
member of the national executive of the Liberal Federation of Canada. He was
called to the Senate in March, 1968. Senator McLean’s devotion to his work and
his community were legendary in Charlotte County. He traveled little and devoted
his energies expanding and developing his company and in the progress of his
community and province. He was past director of the Fisheries Council of
Canada., a past president of the New Brunswick Fish Packers’ Association, a
member of the finance committee of the New Brunswick Research and Productivity
Council, a member of the Local Employment Committee of the Unemployment
Insurance Commission and an alternative member of the Roosevelt Campobello
International Park Commission. His Maiden speech in the Senate dealt with fish
conservation dealt with fish conservation and jobs, and a fellow Senator
described him as one of the most active committee members of the Upper House,
with a broad interest and knowledge of industry, finance, fisheries,
shipbuilding and rural life. In 1972 he received an honorary doctor of laws
degree from the St. Thomas University, Fredericton.
In 1934 he married the former Catherine Mary Walsh of Chatham who survives, also a son, Donald A.
