Off Clam Carrier In View of Son At Beaver Harbour
- Captain Herbert Wright, 71, Losing Balance in Wind, Unable to Be Reached in
Time Desperate Efforts - BEAVER HARBOUR, Charlotte County., March 17 -
(Special) - Captain Herbert Wright, 71, who spent his lifetime as a fisherman
along the Charlotte County coast, was drowned here today in view of his son,
Harry, 38, who failed in a desperate effort to save him.
One of the most active fisherman in this district and
recognized as an authority on weather, coastline and fishing conditions, Captain
Wright and his son had been engaged for several winter seasons in boating clams
from diggers along the Point Lepreau-St. Andrews coast to the Beaver Harbour
Canning Co., Ltd., here. It was while in this work today that he lost his life.
The two men had discharged their cargo of clams at about 1
p.m. and were taking their large motor boat, known locally as the "main
clam carrier," to its mooring in the harbor, when, in the face of a heavy
easterly wind, a large dory in tow became entangled with another boat lying at a
mooring.
Harry Wright, busy with the engine, did not see his father go
forward to clear the other craft and did not hear him fall overboard, apparently
having lost his balance in the wind on the curved roof of the forward cabin.
When the son did discover the veteran captain in the water,
he was a considerable distance away. He threw his father a line, but was unable
to reach him. The he cut the dory clear and attempted to row to the victim, but
his progress was slow against the heavy wind.
In the meantime two young men, Stanley and Weldon Paul,
brothers, realizing the seriousness of the situation from the shore 400 yards
from the scene, rushed to the government wharf about 500 yards distant and
procured a motor boat, in which they were able to reach Mr. Wright, whose body
was still floating in the water.
They took him aboard unconscious and transported him to the
government wharf, then, with the help of others who gathered, to R.J. Barry's
store at the head of the wharf. There the group worked over the body for more
than 15 minutes, rolling it on barrels in an attempt to revive the man, until
the arrival of Dr. F.J. Cheesman, St. George. The latter was summoned by Harry
Wright, who had coasted with the wind to the beach. Dr. Cheesman, coroner for
the district, pronounced Mr. Wright dead and gave permission for removal of the
body.
The boat from which the fisherman fell to the water was a
large one, open except for the forward decked-over cabin, and held from 40 to 50
barrels of clams. The coastline which the father and son traversed in their clam
carrying activities was from 35 to 40 miles in length.
In the former years the veteran had captained sardine boats
off this coast. He was known as a great line fisherman, expert at trawl setting.
He knew the country like a book and was a recognized authority on weather signs.
He was known for his caution in not venturing forth when rough weather was in
the offing and many times during his lifetime gave warning to other fisherman
when storms were imminent.
Captain Wright, who observed his 49th wedding anniversary
last month, is survived by his wife, five sons, Grovner, Albert, Fenwick, Owen
and Harry, and five daughters, Mrs. Percy Eldridge and Miss Burla Wright, all of
Beaver Harbour; Mrs. Albert Justason, Black's Harbour; Mrs. Donald Matthews,
West Saint John, and Mrs. Preston Wentworth, L'Etete.
