Waterford Parish is found by traveling east from Sussex to Sussex Corner, where you turn right and proceed towards Poley Mountain (found in Waterford Parish). It is bounded on the west by the Parish of Sussex, on the north by the Parish of Cardwell, on the east by Albert County, and on the south by the Parish of Hammond. The parish seat is the little village of Waterford, once known as Seeley's Mills.

Waterford Parish was originally part of the larger Sussex Parish. When New Brunswick was established as a separate province from Nova Scotia, Kings County was formed in 1786. It consisted of only four parishes at its inception: Westfield, Springfield, Kingston and Sussex. In 1795, part of Sussex parish was incorporated into the new parish known as Hampton. In that same year, another portion of Sussex Parish was incorporated into a second new parish, Norton. In1840, another section of Sussex Parish became Studholm Parish. Then, in 1874, two further sections, the present day parishes of Cardwell and Waterford were created as separate parishes.

Portions of Waterford Parish were also considered to be part of its southern neighbour, Hammond Parish, until 1874. Examples of this are Long Settlement and the area east of Walton's Lake but north of the present parish lines up to and including the road from Lisson Settlement to Walton Lake and beyond.
