Waterford Parish was originally part of the larger Sussex
Parish. When New Brunswick was established as a separate province from
Nova Scotia, Kings County was formed in 1786. It consisted of only four
parishes at
its inception: Westfield, Springfield, Kingston and Sussex. In 1795, part of
Sussex parish was incorporated into the new parish known as Hampton. In
that same year, another portion of Sussex Parish was incorporated into
a second new parish, Norton. In1840, another
section of Sussex Parish became Studholm Parish. Then, in 1874, two
further sections, the present day parishes of Cardwell and Waterford
were created as separate parishes.
