John 5651[3] LONDON (Ralph #1 5599, 2)[1]. Born, 1782, in USA. The fact that brothers John & Ralph, Loyalists, both gave the names of John & Ralph to their sons is very confusing. The two John Londons were born about a year apart & came as infants with their parents John & Ralph. John, the son of John, can be distinguished from his cousin John, son of Ralph by identifying the names of his three wives, Sarah, Salome & uth. This John made a successful petition for land along the St. John River in Queens County dated September 6, 1819. He gives his age as 37, making his birth date as 1782, says he has 4 children, & identifies himself as Ralph's son. (F4184) Baptism records for Kingston parish 1816-1900, indicate that the following children of John London, blacksmith of Kingston, & Emily London, were baptised December 14, 1826: Mary Anne Jonathan Rachel Pheby John Henry Lington(?) Elizabeth Emily Ralph The Rachel here may be the Rachel, aged 45 years, Episcopalian, a domestic servant, listed in the 1861 census for Kingston parish. Bell (p. 218) notes that Ralph was accompanied to Saint John from New York by his wife & one child under the age of 10 years. This would be the John below. Ralph's wife's name begins with "Ma" but is illegible. She was 38 years of age in 1851. Children listed are: Sarah A. age 18 (born 1833) George F. 15 (born 1836) Delilah, 13 (1838) Lucella, 10 (1841) Ralph, 8 (1843) Charles, 5 (1846) Phebe, 1 (1850) In 1840 Ralph London received a land grant of 50 acres in Queens County. In 1861 he was living with his brother James (see James)in Westfield along with his two sons Ralph & Charles. (1861 census for Westfield). Land grants: F16520 & 16521. New Brunswick Provincial Archives. Wedding records for Kings County indicate that Ralph of Westfield married Mary Gibson (the "MA..."?) October 6, 1832. Birth(2): 1844 The following information came from George Albert LONDON, 83 years old, address 57 Turnbull Place, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, 12 Feb 1973: His father - Ralph London - born 1844 died 1919 His grandfather - Ralph London, one of the two Londons', British Soldiers, who fought in the War 1812, they were in the March on Snowshoes from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Quebec in mid-winter, thirteen days. There is a plaque in the st. John Museum about this, with the names of the marchers (checked there & they said there was no such plaque & only ones name is on the list. Ralph.) When they came back, they started a Blacksmith shop on the Kenebecasis River at Clifton, New Brunswick, there was a lot of shipbuilding on the river at that time, & they were doing the Iron work for them. Two girls named GIBSON came over from Nova Scotia & Grandfather Ralph married one of them. Their family was: Ralph LONDON husband 59 yrs Sarah LONDON wife 38 yrs b NS Charles LONDON son 5 George LONDON son Phebie LONDON dau 1 George & Phebie died young. His father, Ralph LONDON, was married 3 times & had (I think) 16 children. I (George Albert London) never got any information from my father, but after he died I got a letter from George London Marsden, Northfield, Vermont, 1938, his mother was my father's sister, & he had a son living in Plymouth, N.H. Ralph Ober LONDON - a nephew to George Albert LONDON, he lives also in Saint John,New Brunswick P.S. - I don't think brother (John) stayed at the Blacksmith business, but moved up to Wickham on the St. John River, there is a lot of Londons there now, I met two of them when I was in business (meat & groceries) & they sure looked like our family, one of them (Kenneth London) started a Saw Mill at Hampton. The age for his wife Mary Thompson (Scottish) is given as 50 in the 1851 census for Wickham & 65 in the 1861 census! The names of their children are given thus: Edward 23 (1828) Elmira 20 Abigail 18 Isaiah 16 (25 in the 1861 census; 1835) Hugh 12 (1839) Thomas 21 in the 1861 census, born 1839) Russel 7 (1844) Saloma 3. Witnesses to the marriage of Isaiah & Mary were John Thompson & Eliza Scovil. Mary lived in Hampstead. The 1871 census gives Isaiah's age as 80 years, & Mary's as 68 years. Reported in the Daily News, January 25, 1876: died Alms House (St. John) 22nd January, Jacob London, age 78, native of Westfield (Kings county) The 1861 census for Westfield, Kings county, shows Jacob with his wife Francis, aged 52, from Nova Scotia. They are Episcopalians. Baptism records for Westfield Anglican indicate that the following children of Jacob & Nancy London were baptised January 10, 1842: James Fowler (b June 19, 1832) Maria Louisa (b Nov 22, 1834) Hannah Jane (b Nov 9, 1836) Solomon (b May 5, 1839) Melissa Ann (b Sept 7, 1841). The 1851 census for Westfield records a William London living with his wife, Catherine, his sister Mary (aged 49, born 1802), & his 3 daughters: Caroline S (4 years b 1847) Charlotte L (3 ? b 1848) Sarah J (1 b 1850) The 1851 census gives Catherine's age as 35 whereas 10 years later she is 38 years old! The 1861 census adds: William J., aged 8 years (b 1853) Isabella, aged 6 years (b 1855) Agnes, aged 4 (b 1856) William's age in 1851 is 51 years, & in 1861 he is 62. He is either John or Ralph London's son. Baptism records for Kings County indicate that Alice Elizabeth, born 22 December 1862 baptised 26 December 1862, & Charlotte Lucinda, born 4 September 1846, baptised 5 October 1846. This would eliminate the possibility of this being that Thomas as he would have been only 9 years old. Hence the probability of his being Ralph's son. Witnesses to Thomas & Mary's wedding: William Waugh & Samuel London. He may have received a land grant in the Lincoln, New Brunswick area, which he did not keep, came to Carleton county (ref. Lot 62 was originally granted to Israel Merritt. wife Catherine b 1866; d1949. Alex LONDON lived on Lot 64 in Armond, which was originally granted to James William LONDON (his half brother). Alex took original grant #62 (or was it originally Israel MERRITT?), then deeded to Henry LONDON & wife, Eva SPINNEY. Pg. 16 The Carleton Sentinel reported: 31 September 1865, Alexander London married Mrs. McAfee, officiated by the Rev. Doucett, at the bride's residence. All of Carleton County. The Watchman, 7 October 1876, records: m. At residence of bride's mother, 28th ult., by Rev. W. Wilson, W. H. Niddrie, merchant, Chatham / Mary London, second d/o late Alexander London, Esq., merchant. Given the dates it would seem unlikely that the two Alexanders mentioned in the two announcements are the same person. An Alexander London is listed as the son of Thomas (born 1810) in the 1851 census for Wickham parish, aged 17 years (born circa 1834). His son, Frazer, lived on this lot #65 which he purchased in 1905 & sold to his brother-in-law, ..KIMBALL in 1919. James William LONDON also had adjacent Lot #66 (100 acres), but it is believed that there never had been any buildings on this property. James & Emmerline were caring for Emmerline's cousins, Herbert age 8 & Odbur age 18 SEWELL per 1871 census. A James W. (born c1869) is listed in the Wickham census for 1871 as the two-year old son of Charles London & Jane M. Worden. The widow, Emmerline E. Lund-London remarried Ammi SHAW. Ammi owned Lot 53, & they lived at Coldstream, New Brunswick Iva "Nettie" Kimball-London cared for Emmerline & Ammi in their old age at Lower Brighton. LONDON, 83 Palfrey Road, Belmont, Mass. 02178 17 Feb 1989: Dear Mrs. Faulkner: I finished the LONDON family history in 23 Aug 1975 & in the summer of 1977, gave a set of these papers to the Museum at St. John, New Brunswick. Mrs. Robertson was the Curator at the Museum at that time, & a month later she sent me a letter saying that my history had been accepted & that it was now on micro-film. There are 77 pages, all typewritten & with Coat of Arms. My late father, Walter N. LONDON Sr. was born in Ripples, New Brunswick 22 June 1876 & his mother & 2 sisters left Fredericton New Brunswick & came to Boston in 1889. My father was 13 years old then; his father, George E. LONDON had died when my father was 6 yrs old so I never had a picture of my grandfather. A Short history of some of the London family: In this history there were quite a few men, all with the first name of John London, so hope you will not be confused as I am, at times, after reading this history. John London & his brother Ralph London, came to St. John New Brunswick with the Loyalists in 1783, from the State of New York. John London was my great, great, great grandfather. Edward Mills London, & his father, John London, left Nova Scotia & moved to Upper Gagetown, New Brunswick. Edward Mills London moved to Maquapit Lake in 1860 (now called Grand Lake) when Edward Duncan London was 9 years old, & Edward's half-brothers went to Woodstock New Brunswick in Carleton County & took up residence there. General Arnold Flushing - 28 Aug 1781 TRUMPETER - JOHN LONDON - From 24 April 1781 to 25 Aug 1781 This was an English Army Regiment "Muster Roll of Capt. Frink's Troop of the American Legion" 12 January 1782 - Troop - Quartered in Harlem, New York JOHN LONDON - absent - wounded - on 6 Sept. 1782 - in General Hospital - returned to duty 29 Sept 1782 - still with the troop on uly, 1783 & - quartered at Staten Island, New York JOHN LONDON gave 1 acre of ground to the Church at Kingston, New Brunswick, on which the Trinity Church was built - 5 July 1787. I have never found out from what country the Londons came from, other than in either New York, New Jersey, this was during the American Revolution. In the 70's, did send a letter asking for information, they sent back a letter from the city of London, saying they did not have the time or people to do this for me. All the Londons in my father's relatives were Baptists & of English descent. Another cousin, by marriage to a Wheeler, was: Maude McClusky Wheeler; she lived in Woodstock but do believe that she died some time ago. My grandmother's name was Georgianna Wheeler London. I have many cousins in the Wheeler family, some in Fredericton, & others in Keswick; Dunphys, Sloat: Londons in St. John, New Brunswick & in Lakeville Corner. Last time that I was in New Brunswick was summer 1986. I was married in June, 1956 & retired from the Belmont Fire Dept. Aug. 1981; was the Chief Fire Alarm Operator, had 31 years service there. My wife, Eillen Rowe London, died 8 Oct. 1982 of Sugar Diabetes. My father died in 1950 & my mother died Dec. 1952. I have a younger brother, Charles T London; he lives in Cape Canaveral, Florida in the winter, spends his summers at his camp in Millinocket, Maine. He has a son & a daughter; his son Charles is married, 2 children, lives in Levant, Maine, near Bangor. His daughter, Deborah is married, lives in Satilette Beach, Florida; does not have any children. We did not have any children as my wife was diabetic; she did not get the diabetes until May of 1970.
