Hartland has the "Longest Covered Bridge"in the World, 1282 ft.

The covering protected the flooring and heavy timbers from the sun and rain and the bridges were expected to last 80 years, while one not covered would last approx 10 years. These bridges looked like a barn so eased animals fears of the rushing water beneath. Covered bridges were also known as "kissing bridges", suitors trained horses to stop inside the darkened enclosures.

James Pearson was the toll keeper on the covered Hartland bridge when it was first built.
