Civil War Veteran's

We are looking for the grave sites of the following men from Carleton County who served in the US Civil War. If you know the burial site of any veteran please e mail Terry Middleton and / or  Lezlie Carson.

Co. I of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, is a Canadian based reenactment unit headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick. They have taken on a project where they are attempting to identify and locate Civil War Veterans that are buried in the Maritime Provinces. Once identified they conduct a graveside ceremony with the reenactors firing a salute with the black powder muskets to honour the memory of the Veteran. On each grave they place a plaque with a shield and the letters GAR which signify Grand Army of the Republic. A chaplain also performs a reading over each grave.

Kinney, A. P.
Carleton Sentinel Newspaper Dec 4, 1886, page 2 Plymouth ( Carleton Co.)
A veteran of the war of rebellion showed his fantasmagoria here Friday eve., His battle scenes were fine.
On Wednesday eve. 21st May ,
A. P. Kinney, who served in the war of the Great Rebellion from 61 to 65 gave a Magic Lantern exhibition in the school. house.
June 7, 1890 , Woodstock Supplement .
The Sentinel had an interesting caller Saturday in the person of Mr. A. P. Kinney of Houlton who was born at Victoria Corner 83 years ago on the " Jim Jones" place. The aged gentlemen is very active and has a fund of interesting reminiscences. He is a veteran of the American civil war and took part in fourteen battles, the last being in the " Wilderness " where he was wounded and lay a day and night on the battlefield before receiving any attention. Mr. Kinney is now living with his son Harry at Westfield and has been attending a conference of the United Baptists at Caribou, Maine, where he took an active part in the musical exercises, singing a tenor solo. He is a cousin of the Hon. George E. Foster.

Laing, John K -25 years old in 1861- from Pvt to Lt. Col. Found
I am writing on behalf of Mrs. Barbara (Laing) Tompkins re: another of the veterans of the American Civil War. Her grandfather  John Laing, originally from Dundee, Scotland and Halifax, N.S. moved to Boston and joined the North Mass. Light Infantry and was subsequently wounded at Gettysburg early in the war...1861. After his service in that conflict, Mr. Laing and his wife moved to West Glassville, N.B. where he  lived out his short life  on their farm. He died at the age of 44 a direct result of his war wounds. Mr. Laing and his wife are buried in the Glassville Cemetery, Glassville, N.B. and I thought it might be nice to have his name listed among the Maritime volunteers of that war.
