This is a fishing weir found along the
Campobello Coast line. Weirs were first established aound 1858 in
Harbor deLutre, Friars Bay, and at the Narrows. "Weirs are
cages built to trap herring. Long poles extending from ocean
bottom to a few feet above high water level are pounded into the
ocean floor. The tops of these poles are covered with brush
horizontally and then
with twine, top and bottom. At night the herring come to the shore
where the weir is built and hopefully swim inside .The herring
are then seined up using a net seine swept across the
herring." Photo Submitted by Judy Milne, Definition of how
they are used by Karen Small... thanks gals! Added 15/10/2000
