Hi There,

I'm looking to share notes and information with researchers and descendants of Thomas Parker (1775-1868) and Ann Mears who were married on Campobello on 2 May 1801.

According to some sources, Thomas and Ann had at least 15 children while at Campobello. Many of the Parker women married into the Mitchell family.

Best Regards,

James

Great site and I'm finding alot of info here. I'm stuck at Leonard Ford Newman and his wife, Maria. I don't know what her maiden name was but I believe she died on Campobello. Leonard Ford Newman, her husband, was born and died on Campobello. He is the father to Jeremiah Newman, Sr and the grandfather to Jeremiah Newman, Jr. I know there are ancestors of these men on Campobello. Hope to hear from one or more of them to maybe help me out. I am the granddaughter of Jeremiah Newman Jr. Thanks for all your work on this, Heather and your worker bees.

I cannot find any info on Grandfathers parents and so on

Comments:

I need help in finding info on my paternal grandfather his name is Aubrey Dyas Matthews he was born on April 3, 1915, he married Leona Bara Porter on July 13, 1936. Some of the info that I have found is not entirely correct, he had alot of brothers and sisters, somewhere around 10, so I have been told by family members but any info I have found on the site only has 5. Aubrey and Leona had 11 children, so far the count I have come up with for them is 44 grand, 84 great-grand, and 9 great-great grand. Aubrey died a long time ago somewhere around 1960 I would say. Leona is still alive and doing very well.If you can help me I would appreciate it. My father and his siblings are very interested in this side of the family as I have filled them in on the maternal side. Thank You

I am trying to connect family stories to real history.

Comments:

My great grandmother, Salome Arlette Smith, told many stories about her family in Machias and their connections with both Campobello and Lubec. She married a master mariner, William Francis Durant, from Parrsboro, NS, - but despite living far from home she kept her Maine accent always. One story I particularly remember that someone might be able to help with is the following : Apparently our family was contacted concerning a graveyard on Campobello that was to be moved. Some level of permission was needed from descendants of those buried in the graveyard. Does this ring a bell for anyone? It would have been long ago. I can't believe it was a common occurance however. I would appreciate any help.

I will be visiting Campobello the week of August 12 thru the 19th, 2006. I am a great-great grandson of Arthur and Sophia Gould Flagg. My main interest is in Willim P and Fannie Dennison Flagg's (William and Fannie were married in Lubec in 1881 adopted Stella in 1881-1883)daughter Stella. Any leads as to where I can locate info on this adoption would be appreciated.

Most of all though we are going to enjoy Campobello and North Perry Maine where I spent several weeks a summer in the early to mid 1950s.

The children of Joseph Holmes and Silence Brown

Comments:

Hello,

I have been able to trace Joseph Holmes, born about 1720, Portsmouth NH and his 2nd marriage to Silence Brown in 1760. I have Joseph and Silence moving from Machias to Campobello in about 1772. I think four of their sons eventually ended up in L'Etete, they would be Jeremiah, Joseph, Robert and Stephen. These four sons were born on Campobello and I think Dolly Holmes is their sister.
Trying to do research on the Holmes is almost impossible! Simply because there were so many of them who moved from southern Maine to the Machias area and some onto Campobello. If anyone has any information, such as did Dolly Holmes have brothers.
Thank you so much, I appreciate your web site!!!
Sincerely, Pamela Stowe, Tucson AZ

Comments:

Not necessariy a brick wall, per se, but did notice an earlier message from Jean asking for more information on this Matthews family. Near as I can tell (along with a couple of others), Howard was the son of Nelson Matthews (possibly "A. Nelson Mathews") and Henrietta "Etta" Daley (b. NS). If you're still interested in more information, or, if others connect to this family, please let me know. There's another Porter/Mathews combination that's rather interesting, but only because the Daleys and Porters of Digby Co, NS are interconnected. I haven't yet found any connection between the Porters of Campobello and the Porters of Digby Co, NS, though. Surely, the Matthews/Mathews family seems to be fairly well documented in various databases, with Stephen (b. 1775) seemingly the patriarch of the family in Campobello.

Cheers,

Jared

What Surnames are you researching from Campobello?

William Johnston, William and Isabella Gilligan

Comments:

My gg Grandfather, William Johnston, is listed on p. 6 of the Campobello Burying ground, and his sister, Isabella Gilligan is listed on p. 5 with her husband William. I believe they are all first generation, coming from Northern Ireland, but at different times. The Gilligans are seen in many of the Campobello Censuses, but William Johnston is not. He came to the US with his family around 1861 and went to Campobello to live for a short time with the Gilligans. The Johnston family moved to Perry, ME soon after and when William died he was buried back on Campobello. His wife, Eliza Burrows Johnston is buried in Restlawn Cemetery in Perry, ME.

Does anyone have any information on these families and/or know who I would write to to obtain a copy of their death certificates? Thank you

My great-great grandmother Augusta Porter, b. abt. 1844, m. Samuel Matthews of Eastport & had one child, Frank, b. Jan 22, 1867 Eastport. My grandfather, Edward Matthews, said his grandmother left her husband and son and "went West." He also thought Augusta was from Campobello. The 1870 U.S. Census for Eastport lists Augusta Matthews, 26, born N.B., both parents of "foreign birth". She was a domestic servant to Mary Morrison. Living in the same house is a 25-yr-old fisherman, born in Maine, and a 34-yr-old fisherman, also born in Maine. The ink is smudged but it looks like their names were Wellington Porter and Samuel Matthews. Even tho the census says he was born in Maine, was Wellington Augusta's brother?
I have been looking for Augusta for years but have had no success.
I hope this wasn't her ......In the 1900 U.S. Census, a "patient" at the Ada Bryce Insane Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was an Augusta Matthews, age 57, born Feb., 1843, location unknown. Parents' birthplaces unknown. It said she was married.

Thanks to Heather we now think that perhaps Allen is the son of Edward and Isabelle Calder. We know he was married to RebeccaJane/Jane Rebecca Flagg around 1860 and died about 1861. He presumably died at sea and she remarried a Lawson. Allen was born in Campobello, married possibly on Grand Manan. She died there in 1868. Looking for verification of. Allen may have lived with a Simon Wison family after his parents died. Looking for any further info on Alle,Edward,I sabelle for further verification. Thanks

Charles MCDOWELL (also born in Ireland) son of John moved to Hastings County, Ontario.

I'm researching the Richard Hooper and his sons, William and James who came to NB as Loyalists after the Rev. War in the states and William settled on Deer Island, N.B. I'm looking for muster rolls that list them as Royal Fencible Americans, which they purported were but can't find their names anywhere. Also looking for info on James Doughty, also Loyalist from So. Carolina to Deer Island after Rev. War. Any help of any kind would be greatly appreciated. I'm using primarily Martha Ford Barto's book Passamaquoddy for which all Deer Islanders should be eternally grateful. My Irish, Edward Gibson, ggggrandfather bought his land on Deer Island from Cadwallader(?) Curry from Campobello so I'm linked to Campo in that regard. I visit Deer Island every summer and come over to your lovely island whenever I can. Great place and the success of your website makes me wish some aspiring Deer Islander would do the same. Thanks, d.Hoop

Beniah (Benagah) Dow married Hannah Mitchell in Campobello on December 29, 1800. Other sources gave Maine as the place and no date. This is obviously better information. I am going to research this site for more information on Beniah and Hannah. It looks like it is possible that Hannah Mitchell had family in Campobello.
Beniah was my 3rd greatgrandfather. Other sources give her name as Johanna.

Your Campobello looks beautiful. I was raised and my family goes back several generations from Campobello, South Carolina USA.
It is also a beautiful small town, situated in the foothills (piedmont)of the Southern Applachian Mountains near the border of North and South Carolina.
No ocean, but a great view of Hogback Mountain (elevation 3,116 feet)

Best regards,
Don F.

I just have a feeling that there is a connection between Medley Wilson and my fathers family {Ring}. Ive made several calls to the island and everyone has been great but no one seems to know the answer. I started out calling the Rosevelt Estate because the onlly name I had was Uncle Medley. There I got his last name and his brothers name and the telephone number of the library and called there. The nice lady there gave me some mor information on who to call and they were also very nice but........ When I finally connected with one person and mentioned that I had no idea where {Wilson} fit in and that the name I was researching was {Ring} she told me that she remembered 'Mother Ring' vacationing on the island. So, Now I am looking for any information on 'Mother Ring'. Thanks
