The cottage was built in 1897 next to one built in the early 1880's by James and Sara Roosevelt (parents of the future US President Franklin D. Roosevelt). The original owner of the cottage was Mrs. Hartman Kuhn. At the time of Mrs. Kuhn's death she left the cottage to Sara Roosevelt at the bargain price of $5000. The cottage was purchased by Sara in 1909 furnished and 2 hectares of land. This was the first year that Franklin, Eleanor and their children would vacation there. They would return to the cottage every summer between 1909-1921. The original design of the house was altered in 1915 when Franklin had a wing added to provide for his growing family. Franklin inherited the home in 1941 when his mother died.
The home is now part of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. Near the cottage are pleasant walks by attractive gardens, wooded paths and fields. Scenic vistas overlook the islands and shores of Passamaquoddy and Cobscook Bays in NB and Maine. To the west of the cottage grounds is Friar's Head where there is a picnic area, nature trails and splendid views of the bay. Photo submitted by Judy Milne Added 15/10/2000
