300 Head of Cattle Are Delivered to the Indians

In the neighborhood of 3500 head of cattle have been bought by the government in Sioux County under the drought relief work.  Over 300 have been delivered to the Indians, each family receiving one head per week, while the rest of the cattle are being shipped from railway points in the county along the South Dakota line, to concentration points, principally at St. Paul.  There they will be slaughtered, processed and the meat stored for relief to needy during the coming winter.  This beef is being kept off the market and as a result of the depletion of herds the price of cattle is showing a decided upward trend, beef now selling at the highest it has in several years.

A total of 1,000 head will be issued the Indians on the reservation in North Dakota and they are "jerking" it in the old time way for future use.  The stockmen are receiving $6.00 for everything over two years old, $5.00 for one to two years and $3.00 for calves.  All over these amounts go to pay off indebtedness for which the cattle were held as security.

A. T. Dexter, of Fargo, is State Director, and has worked out the plan and put it into effect in a most satisfactory manner.
