Notes for EDWIN RICHMOND MERRELL:

Born in 1858 to Alexander and Sarah (Black) Merrell, Edwin Richmond married Effie Hood (Eliza) Reed in the area of Irene, Hill County, Texas in 1886. The Merrells and the Francis Marion and Nancy Evaline (Williams) Reed family were very close, living "right across the crop row" from each other as well as being listed on the 1880 Texas Census as families # 175 and 176. The Merrells were farmers and ginners, having operated gins both Hill County and Shallowater, Lubbock County, Texas.

My cousin, Edith tells of how in 1925 Grandpa and Grandma Merrell decided to move to Shallowater. They lived with their oldest son's family, the Chesley Merrells while their house was being built in the area. Edith tells of the demonstration of love Edwin had for his wife Eliza in the following antedote:

"The girls were always trying to get Grandma Merrell to go on a diet (as she was very heavy weighing around 300 pounds) but their attempts were undermined by Grandpa Merrell as he was always slipping extra tidbits to her under the kitchen table." Edith says, "I guess it didn't matter to him how much she weighed, he loved her anyway."

Edwin was also an active member of the Methodist church having been Sunday School superindent. (He signed his granddaughter’s Cradle Roll certificate) when his son Byron enrolled his daughter in the nursery at the Methodist church.

Notes for EFFIE HOOD (ELIZA) REED:

According to my cousin, Edith, she noted she never saw the grandparents work very hard.  Grandma Merrell died in 1947 at the age of 80. Rix Funeral Home handled the burial. They are both buried in the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
