Message: "I am not a relative, but I saw a story about James R. Toney in the Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Southern Arkansas, pubished by Goodspeed Pub. Co. in the 1890's. During the Civil War, he had a plantation on the east side of the Ouachita River. He owned a mercantile store in Camden from 1867-1876. He was born in Smith Co., TN in 1817, son of Elijah and Mary Rucks Toney. Elijah Toney had a mercantile business in Carthage, TN from 1800-1834 and served as Smith Co., TN treasurer. Elijah's father was Alexander Toney of VA. Mary Rucks's father was Josiah Rucks, a minister of the Baptist Church. James Toney had three wives and the following children: Mary E. Green, Jane M. Scott, James M., Jennie A. Coffee, Nannie E. James had a brother, John R. Toney. born Oct. 7, 1822. John Toney's daughter, Jane, married Dr. W. Folden of Holly Springs, AR. Jane Toney Folden is buried in Holly Springs Cem. John Toney also had a daughter, Mary R. Wright. During this time period, an Alexander Toney also lived in southern AR. Perhaps you will find that you are related to this family. Good luck with your hunting."
