FROM KIMBROUGH GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY-VOL 1, NUMBER 2 (April 1964)

Records are found of a Margaret Kimbrough and a Benjamin Kimbrough, believed to be children of Colonist John Kimbrough and his wife Margaret. The Marmaduke Kimbrough of Virginia and North Carolina in the 1730's to 1760's mentions his youngest sister Margaret, and places Marmaduke as a son of Margaret. Records imply Nathaniel Kimbrough was a brother of the above Marmaduke.

Some believe him to be the son of John Kimbrough, Jr. and Elizabeth? due to the age the Colonist John Kimbrough would have been at Marmaduke's birth. However, if Margaret, his third wife, was presumably much younger,it is certainly a strong possiblity that Marmaduke was a child of this marriage. Also, Buckley Kimbrough is known to be a child of the marriage of John Kimbrough and Margaret Natin or Buckley and Buckley and Marmaduke are closely allied, lending credance to the theory that they are brothers.

Robert B. Kimbrough, in his research, has concluded that old records have been influenced by dialects, poor spelling, indistinct pronunciation and other problems. The Kimbrough name appears as KIMBROUGH, KIMBRO, KIMBER, KEMBER, CYNEBURN, KYNEBURG, KINBURGA, and a few other variations. The name KIMBROUGH is seldom seen in the British Isles. It is believed that the current spelling is the "Americanization" of the surname.

The record of Captain Miles Cook of London show that pursuant to a contract made the previous year, demanded land rights for transporting 13 men and women of British descent, kincluding John KEMBER "to seat a plantation etc." this KEMBER appears in land records in Maryland in 1722 and 1733. Researchers have a very difficult time where names are recorded in so many different ways. Kimbrough coined a name for himself and his descendants, or the name became altered beyond current recognition by the language and educational difficulties experienced during the colonial days.

Legends of a family have a way of being distorted and possibly invented . The legend that our Colonist Ancestor, whose name became John Kimbrough, arrived in the Colonies about 1666 with a wife Mary, said to have been a Douglas(s), and children John, Jr., Marmaduke and Jane, in the company of a Robert Douglas(s), seems to have a chance of being correct. Thanks to some twenty-five or more lawsuits, we find a John Kimbrough (various spellings) in Maryland from 1667 to 1676. His first found appearance in court is as a witness involving payment for nursing and possibly medication rendered by one Goody Dod or Dode, wife of a Richard Dod. His testimony reveals he did some type of work for Robert Clearke (Clark), Surveyor General of the Dominion of Ma ryland.1 Later testimony reveals Colonist John Kimbrough helped Robert Clearke survey a parcel of land, but there is no indication of the nature of the assistance rendered. Estimates of his age recorded in two different court proceedings, when serving as a juror, indicate he was born sometime between 1640 and 1647.

John KIMBROUGH sailed from the British Isles in 1666 with his wife on the ship of Captain Miles Cook of London. The ship landed at Port Tobacco, Maryland carrying his children John Jr., Marmaduke and James along with a relative of his wife, Robert Douglas. He lived for a while in St. Marie's (St Mary's), the seat of the Maryland government at that time.

He applied for a pension in 1676 while living in New Kent Co., VA. He was able to collect a pension of 1000 lbs of tobacco and cask annually until 1714. It is believed that he was wounded while fighting in Bacon's Rebellion.

John Kimbrough donated land and materials for the construction of St. P aul's Church in New Kent Co., VA.

"The reader, by now, can correctly assume that there is disagreement among researchers as to the exact lineage of the descendents of John Kimbrow (KIMBROUGH) of New Kent Co., VA. There do not appear to be sufficient reliable records available for any researcher to have confidence in their best effort to illustrate the structure of his descendents for the first three generations. (Nat Blackwood)"

John KIMBROUGH - b. 1661, England; d. 1750, New Kent Co., VA. Son of John KIMBROUGH and Mary DOUGLAS. Married in 1698, New Kent Co., VA.
