eldest daughter and co-heir of Roger de Merlay, an eminent baron
of the north. Mary de Merlay, eldest daughter and co-heir, was
twenty-four at the time of her father's death and also then
married. In the partition of her father's estate in 1271 Morpeth
Castle and Manor were allotted to her and her husband, but in
1286 Robert de Somerville and his wife, her sister Isabel,
entered a suit against her and her husband for her purparity of
Morpeth, to which she answered in court that in the partition of
the estate, which had been made, the Manor of Witton and the
Woods of Schuldeten and East Park had been allotted to them and
were of greater value than the other property. She married 1st
Walter de Bolbec and 2nd William, Lord Greystoke.
