Bartholomew DUPUY

ABT 1652 - 17 Jul 1743

ID Number: I455

  1. +Peter (Pierre) DUPUY Sr.
  2. +Martha (Martre) DUPUY
  3. +John James DUPUY

  5. +Francoi DUPUY

Notes

Alias: DUPAY DuPUY, Bartholmew. CONFLICT of Royal Ancestry: The American Genealogist (also called TAG) vol. 74, no. 1, January 1999, pages 1 - 14. It concerns the origin of Barthelemy Dupuy of Manakin Town, Virginia. The aforementioned article shows that Barthelemy and his wife were from the villages of St. Jean de Maruejols and Uzes in Languedoc. The author was unable to find any absolute evidence to show who the parents of this couple were, the lineage going back through nobility is an obvious fabrication, making no references to any documents whatsoever. This same article states that "it is at least important to jettison the contrived pedigree sold by the yard and furnished a gullible Benjamin Dupuy by one Mr Henry Dudley Teetor".

A Captain of the Royal Household Guards under Louis the fourteenth.

His Will listed in Manakintown, King William Parish, Cumberland Co. VA. Probate Records, ww.3/1743, wp. 5/17/1743.

1. Parents of Bartholomew were Jean (John) DuPuy and Anne St. Heyer.
2. Parent of Jean DuPuy was Bartholomy DuPuy, Lord of Cabrielles.
3. Father of Bartholomy was Pierre DuPuy.
4. Father of Pierre was Jean DuPuy, founder of the Protestant family of Cabrielles, upper Landuedoc, Jean died about 1583. There was another son, Raymond, who married Antoinette Bourasie, Dame de Periens.
5. Parents of Jean were Jacques (James) who first married in 1476 Francois Artaud, then later Jeanne, duaghter of the Governor of Vese. Jacques died in 1505. Other children included Jacques, Honorat and Guillaume.
6. Parents of Jacques were Ainier (Chevalier de l'ordre de St. Jean de Jerusalem) and Catharine de Bellecombe.
7. Parents of Ainier were Gilles 2nd who married first Florence de Hauteville and second, Beatrix de Tauligman. He died in 1420. Other children include Ainier (first born, above Ainier was 5th born), Deider, Claude, Jean and Marie. Don't know which woman is mother.
8. Parents of Gilles 2nd were Gilles and Alix de Bellecombe. He died in 1390. Gilles 2nd was the first child. Others include Artoit, Ainier, Guillaume, Alleman and Francois.
9. Parents of Gilles were Alleman 5th and Ainarde de Roland.
10. Parents of Alleman 5th were Allemen 4th and Eleanore, daughter of Jean Alleman, Seigneur de Lancoil.
11. Parents of Alleman 4th were Alleman 3rd and Bearix Artod.
12. Parents of Allemen 3rd were Alleman 2nd and Alix, Princess Dauphine.
13. Parents of Alleman 2nd were Hugues 2nd and Floride Moiran.
14. Father of Hugues 2nd was Alleman 1st.
15. Parents of Alleman 1st were Hugo (Hugh, Hugues) and Deurard de Poisseu. Other children were Rodolophe, Romaine and Raymond who went with their father on the Crusades in 1096 under Godfrey (Godegroi) de Bouillon, Duke of Lorraine.
16. Father of Hugo was Raphael Du Puy (Raphael de Podio) who was appointed Governor of the Provinces of Languedoc and Dauphiny in southeast France by the German Conrad II after being united with the German Empire in 1033.

Pedigree of Bartholomew Dupuy 1652-1743, H. D. Tector, genealogist. CONFLICT: there is NO evidence for the statement that: He was a lineal descendant of Raphael Dupuy, Grand Chamberlain of the Roman Empire. Coat of Arms granted by Holy Roman Emperor Conrad, 1033. See Vol I, "Americans of Gentle Birth." There are NO authenticated grants of arms or indeed use of coats of arms as we know them heraldically before the mid-12th century. This is clearly a fabrication. Derek Howard, Brussels, Belgium

"He was a lineal descendant of Raphael Dupuy, Grand Chamberlain of the Roman Empire. Coat of Arms granted by Holy Roman Emperor Conrad, 1033. See Vol I, "Americans of Gentle Birth.""

"Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article LXIII. From the family of Dupuys I have gotten the old church register, which, though rotten and torn and in fragments, has been kept so as to enable me to obtain the statistics given in this article. The foregoing account of the escape of Bartholomew Dupuy and his wife is a true picture of the methods resorted to by the persecuted Huguenots to fly from the kingdom. Nothing now remains but that I mention the names of those families still remaining in Virginia who derive their descent from the Huguenots. From information coming through books and individuals they are as follows:--Marye, Fontaine, Dupuy, Harris, Sublett, Watkins, Markam, Sully, Chasteen, Duvall, Bondurant, Flournoy, Potter, Michaux, Pemberton, Munford, Hatcher, Jaqueline, Bernard, Barraud, Latane, Moncure, Agie, Amouet, Chadouin, Dibrell, Farrar, Fuqua, Jeter, Jordan, Jouette, Le Grand, Ligon, Maupin, Maxey, Pasteur, Perrou, Thweatt, Maury, Boisseau, Fouche, Lanier, Le Neve. Concerning a few of these it may be questioned whether they be not of Welsh descent, while there are doubtless others who might be added."

"I was interested in the debunking of the wonderful Dupuy pedigree. My husband and I have visited Royan and searched in vain for Castle Velour, or the "Velvet Castle." Royan is a pretty little Atlantic beach community almost entirely inhabited by French native tourists (not the Riviera). We decided that because of the persecution of the Huegenots, the French Revolution, and the Nazi occupation of France, there are so few existing records and so few original buildings it's sort of like researching your ancestors in Atlantic City."

"The French ancestry of Bartholomew Dupuy is given in two genealogies--The Huguenot Bartholomew Dupuy & His Descendants by the Rev. B. H. Dupuy(1908) which has been reprinted by Higgerson and Colonial Men & Times by Lillie Dupuy Van Culin Harper (1916). I have copies of both. The pedigree in the first was prepared by Henry Dudley Teetor a professional genealogist from N.Y.
The lineage is the same but the 2nd work gives more data. The author of the 2nd work
did not do a good job of organizing her work, but seems to have good data. The line of Bartholomew of Virginia starts with Raphael Dupuy circa 1033. The lordship of Montbrun seems to start in the family with Alleman Dupuy I living in 1143 who married Veronique dau of Giraud Ademar, Lord of Monteil. Isenberg in Europaische Stamfallen has the Lords of Monteil, but the dates are out of sync. with the foregoing. Their son, Hugues II styled himself among other titles
Lord of Montbrun and married Floride Moiran, dau. of Berlion de Moiran. Their son was
Alleman II married Alix, princess of Dauphine who should be identifiable, but so far I have been unsuccessful. The title of Dauphine at this time was passed through heiresses. The son, Alleman III is referred to as first cousin of Humbert, the Dauphin, and lent Humbert money in 1290. Alleman III married Beatrix dau. of Pierre Ysoard Artaud Lord of Glandage. (This line can be extended)
They had 3 sons plus other children. The oldest, Alleman IV was ancestor of Bartholomew; the 2nd Bastet was founder of the branch of Montbrun; the 3rd Humbert was Cardinal & Archbishop of Boulogne.
On page 369, there is a reference to a book from the Bibliotheque National "Histoire
Genealogique des Famille de De Puy-Montbrun by Guy Allard (1682 Grenoble). At page 371 there is a chart of the house of Montbrun through 1659, Jim
