Mother: Elizabeth MOORE |
born 1779 in Albemarle county, Virginia. when about five years
old he was taken in 1784, by his mother and stepfather, Col.
Joseph Crockett,, to Jessamine County, Kentucky.
His stepfather was very devoted to him and gave him a father's
care and affection. When they became permanently settled in
Kentucky, Eol. Crockett entered for this boy about a thousand
acres of land on the pike between Nicholasville and Lexingtonl,
gave him every advanteage that the educatinal facilities of
Kentucky then could offer, and had him thoroughly prepared for
the legal profession. He studied law under the supervision of
Judge George Nicholas, for whom, in later years, he named one of
his sons. He was married about 1802 to Miss Anna Randolph Meade,
daughter of Col. David Meade and Sarah Waters of Chaumiere,
Nicholasville, Kentucky. the country at that time was new,
sparseley setteled, and but little more than a wilderness.
Jessamine county was organized in the spring of 1803. When the
first circuit court was constituted in April of that year, its
first order was the appointment ofa cler as follows: "It is
ordered thath samuel H. Woodson be appointed clerk to this
court, and the pro tempore appointment made by the court this
day be discontinued. Thereupon the said Samuel H. Woodson be
appointmed clerk to this court, as follows: "It is order that
Samuel H. Woodson be appointed clerk to this court and the pro
tempore appointment made by the court this day be discontinued."
Thereupon, the said Samuel H. Woodson took the several oathes
required by law, and executed his bond, wiht Joseph Crockett and
William Lewis his securities in the penal sum of 1,000 pounds.
After his marriage with anna Randolph Meade, he built his home
on the Danville pike about one mile from Nicholasville, and
there he kept his office as clerk. There were no county
buildings in those days, and the judges and clerks used their
residences for the discharge of theri official duties. He held
the office until 1819 when he resigned to take his seat in
Congress, to which he had been elected, and where he able
represented the Ashland district until 1824. In 1825-26
He represented Jessamine county in the legislature, and
afterwards made his home in frankfort. In the monthy of August,
when the weather was oppressively warm, he rode horseback from
Frankfort to Nicholasville to attend court. During this term of
court, he went out to Chaumiere, was taken suddently ill and
died, in the forty seventh year of his age. He was a man of high
culture, scrupulous integrity and much learning; and in his day
was one of the disntinguished men of Kentucky. (see Young's
History of Jessamine County, p. 210.)
