Notes

"Founder of Scotland - United the Scots & Picts in 843 A. D."

"Marriage: Not Known - Offspring: Constantine, Aed and 3 daughters. Alpin his father, of whom nothing is known, was the first in the line of Scottish Monarchs. Kenneth, although never truly crowned a king of Scotland was more responsible for the creation of Scotland by uniting the Scots and the Picts - which was often known as simply SCOTIA but more commonly as ALBA.

What happened to the Pictish Kingdom is still a mystery, but legend would have it that Kenneth spent many an evening inviting the Pictish Royals to huge feasts of wine and meat, and then killing them off as they ate. Historians may argue though, that the Picts actually demised due to the waring nature of the Scots and that the Gaelic Language from them took over and the Picts slowly became part of what is now Scotland. Kenneth I died of Cancer in 859, leaving his new Scottish Kingdom to his Brother Donald!"

'King of the Scots from 843, he subdued the Picts and became first King of Picts & Scots in 843. Rulled lands north of the Fourth & Clyde.'.
'Descended from Dalriada Kings (part of Northern Ireland, the Inner Henrides and Argyll) that were started by Fergus c 500, son of Erc, who came over from Ireland Fergus had 36 known named descendents to Kenneth MacAlpine. 34th King of Dalriada'.

'For 343 years descendents of Fergus and a few of his brother Loarn, rulled part of Scotland with the Picts to the East and North, Kings of Strathclyde to South West and Angles to South East. Later the far north and Western Isles were ruled by the Norse.'.

The name Dalrieda for the Scottish kingdom based in Argyllshire (and for its parent kingdom in northern Ireland) fell into disuse from the time of Kenneth MacAlpin. {Encycl. Brit., 1956 Ed., 6:994; 20:146:} "Dalraida [sic] threw off Pictish control and in 843, when the Norsemen were attacking Pictland, Kenneth MacAlpin, king of the Scots, established a claim by the Celtic law of tanistry to the Pictish throne." Kenneth reigned 844-859.

Cf. H. Pirie-Gordon, "Succession of the Kingdom of Strathclyde," `The Armorial', Vols. 1-2. Kenneth is regarded as the first king of Scotland. He united the Pictist kingdom with his own base in Galloway, and in later years expanded into Lothian (southern Scotland, then part of Saxon Northumbria).
He also had a daughter who married Run of Strathclyde, a king of Scots (they had Eocha, king of Scots).
