JERSEY SETTLERS AND JOHN JONES: Jack Curtis, 706 Harvard,
Cleveland, Miss. 38732, has just released his new book "John
Jones, 1744-1821, Patriot, Planter, and Philanthropist." The
main lineages in this book include Coleman, Griffing, Scott,
Emanuel, Lewis, Dye, Greenleaf, Ridgway, Miller, Harrell,
Edwards, Marble, and Jones.
Curtis' greatest genealogical discovery in researching this book
was the discovery of the existence of the Coleman Bible, which
is Mississippi's oldest Bible, with the longest and most
continuous lineage. This is according to the Jackson State
Archives. Data going back to the early 1700s was extracted from
this book.
His latest book centers around the early Natchez settlers who
came by flatboats from Virginia, the Carolinas and New Jersey.
Most important in this is the fact that the above named families
are descendants of the Jersey Settlers, mainly the Swayze,
Coleman, Griffing and Jones families.
John Jones was a patriot in that he fought in three campaigns in
the Revolutionary War against the British under Francis Marion,
the "Swamp Fox." He fought in several battles including the
Siege of Charleston. His name is inscribed on a table of marble
in the Wren Building at William and Mary College.
John Jones was a planter: Records show his name in connection
with Pee Dee Plantation, which was named for the Pee Dee Valley
near Charleston, where the family lived before coming to
Mississippi in 1781. Records also confirm that he was a trapper,
grower of tobacco, maze, and cotton, and also a cattleman.
He was a philanthropist and promoted projects and ideas through
the Baptist Church, of which he was a member. He was a charter
member of Coles Creek Baptist Church. He also owned a gristmill
on his plantation and allowed everyone to freely grind their
corn into meal. Natchez court records indicate that he was well
respected in the city and surrounding area.
For more information or for to order this soft-cover book,
contact Curtis at the address shown above. The price of the book
(which is fully indexed) is $34, postage and handling included.
