"Benjamin Thurmond was a cash poor farmer in Franklin Co. TN, he never owned any land of his own, and often used his crops, farm animals, and/or household furniture as security for small loans needed to pay the yearly rent due on the farm where he resided.

According to some family descendants, he died as a result of a stomach digestive track disorder, and his wife, Elizabeth, gave local doctors permission to conduct a learning authopsy in exchange for the needed burial expenses.

His widow with children Harrison, Lucy, Susan, Mary, Robert E., and Benjamin L. were residing in Carrol Parish, LA when the US census was taken in 1850. On the 1860 Census of Hinds Co. MS, Elizabeth with her children Robert E., Susan, and Mary are residing with her son Thomas Hastings.

They had 12 Children: Thomas Hastings, Sarah, Martha or Dianna, Nicholas Lewis, Harrison, Benjamin Lamar who m. Lucy K. Brumfield in MS, Dianna or Martha, Lucy C., Susan, Robert E. who m. Martha A. Nesmith, dau of John Nesmith, Nancy a twin of Robert E., and Mary who m. John Dillard a brother of Susan's husband, Charles Dillard."
