His obituary published in the local New Orleans newspaper
follows:
M. J. GUERIN, WAR VETERAN, PASSES
Member of One of the Oldest Families in State and Long Prominent
Morinville J. Guerin died Saturday at his residence, 1624 N.
White street, aged 76 years. The death of Mr. Guerin marks the
passing away of a member of one of the
oldest French families in Louisiana. One of the tombs in the old
St. Louis Cemetery marks the resting place of his grandfather,
Maturin Guerin, who died here March 14, 1822, at the age of 71
years.
Deceased was the eldest son of Jules Guerin and Josephine
Rosignol des Dunes. At an early age he entered the Jesuits
College, when it first opened its doors to pupils in 1848. In
the time of the old volunteer fire department as far back as
1857 he served as a member, retiring as Secretary of Creole Fire
Co. No. 9.
Mr. Guerin was very partial to military practice, and as early
as 1854 participated in the drills of the Orleans Artillery
Battallion at the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the Fifth
Company of the Louisiana Zouaves Battallion under Capt. C. F. De
Gaurray, and Lieut.-Colonel Coppens in April 1861. The command
was ordered to
Warrenton Navy Yards, Pensacola Fla.
From there his command went to Richmond, and later to Yorktown
to reinforce Macgruder, then threatened by Gen. Butler from
Fortress Monroe.
Having been discharged at the end of his enlistment, Mr. Guerin
was assigned to duty of Sargeant-Major in the Twelfth Louisiana
Battallion Heavy Artillery, reorganized by Col. De Gournay.
Served To End Of the War
At the surrender of Port Hudson, Sergeant Guerin was paroled and
given charge of non-commisioned officers and privates of the
command, to report to the proper authorities until exchanged.
When exchanged, Mr. Guerin was assigned to duty in the
Quarter-Master Department and later in the Commisory Department
of the First Louisiana Artillery commanded by Col. Fuller,
Mobile, Ala. from where the whole garrison was ordered to
Meridian, Miss.
At the surrender of Gen. Lee, Mr. Guerin was paroled to report
at this city, where he took the oath of allegiance on June 30,
1865.
Mr. Guerin also took prominent part as a member of the White
League in the overthrowing of the Metropolitan Police, September
14, 1874.
Mr. Guerin for twenty-two years occupied a position with the
Germaine National Bank and for seven years was with the Record
Oil Co.
His first marriage was with Louise Jung, of which union the
following children survive: Mrs. H. B. Bowles, Mrs. Jas. J.
Freret, Mrs. Albert S. Nicaud, Morinville J. Guerin, Jr., and
Marcel Guerin.
He also leaves to mourn his death his present wife, who was Miss
Effie Higginbotham and a sweet little girl, Jeauns. Besides he
leaves a posterity numbering twenty-four grand children.
Mr. Guerin was a grandson of Louis Moreau Lillet, pre-eminent
jurist and legislator of colonial days, and compiler of the
Moreau code of practice then used in Louisiana.
Aka: Marinville John. Guérin. Morinville J. Guérin and Effie
Bertella Higginbotham had, as you know, one daughter: Jeanne des
Dunes Guérin. Her middle name is from
Morinville's maternal line: Rossignol des Dunes de Morinville. I
have information on approximately 400 ancestors of Morinville J.
Guérin. Please let me know if you are interested in further
information." Stephen Vizzini ([email protected])
