"Robert Selden Garnett and his wife, the former Charlotte
Olympia de Gouges, resided at Champlain until their deaths---his
on August 15, 1840 and hers on August 8, 1856, both being
interred in the family burying ground on the estate.
After their deaths, Champlain passed into the hands of their
unmarried daughters and sons who continued to reside there
during their lives. The last surviving son was Captain
Alexander Somervail Garnett, who died there in 1907 at age 76.
With the last of the Garnetts gone, Champlain fell into the
possession of strangers, and in 1924 the old house was destroyed
by fire. Only the gaunt ruin of the stone and brick chimney
remained to mark the site of a home noted for its charm and
hospitality in the ante-bellum days.
In the early years of this century, a later owner of the
Champlain property ploughed under the family burying ground and
all the graves have disappeared except that of Mrs. Olympe de
Gouges Garnett, which remains enclosed by a protective iron
fence."
