Family 1 :
  1. +Son of Sigurd I EARL of Hlodver

Notes

"The Danish had conquered the whole of the north of Scotland led by 'Sigurd the Mighty'. Sigurd claimed the lands and slay his adversary 'Melbrigda Tonn', cut off his head and ceremoniously hung it from his saddle. This however was not such a great idea, as the head bounced around it banged against his leg and a tooth punctured Sigurds leg and he quickly died of blood Poisoning. The now departed Melbrigda Tonn was renamed 'The Tooth'."

Family 1 : Frances WRIGHT

Notes

"Dr. Justin M. Glenn, 2554 Marston Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32312 (authoring a work on the descendants of Col. John Washington):

Frances Wright (b. 1742; m. [1st, on Nov. 30, 1759) Capt. Nimrod Ashby [commissioned justice of the peace of Fauquier Co., Va., 12/1/1762; this commission was renewed on 5/26/1764. Sometime within the next few weeks both Ashby and his hunting companion, William Furman, were killed by a band of ca. 20 Delaware Indians when the two men were hunting near Furman's Fort on the South Branch of the Potomac.

Fauquier County Order Bk. 2:312 appointed a male guardian for his "orphan" children on 6/28/1764. Frances survived him and m. [2nd, ca. 1765) John O'Bannon [tentatively styled "Jr." by J.A.W. According to Sundberg-Gott's recent study of the O'Bannon family, however, he was probably the son of William O'Bannon, and thus the 1st cousin, once removed of Lt. Presley Neville O'Bannon, USMC, hero in the capture of Tripoli during the war against the Barbary Pirates]. She died post Feb., 1784).

Children (by her 1st husband):
Martin Ashby (b. 1760; m. Mir[i]am ___; he d. post 1790).
Thomas Bryan Ashby (b. ca. 1762). [See esp. the following records of Fauquier Co., Va.: Marriage Bk. 1:1, Will Bk. 1:241 and 247, Deed Bk. 10:216, and Court Order Books 1:212 and 2:312; PEYTON, Hist. Augusta Co.,117; RITCHIE, 39; J.K. Gott, "The O'Bannon Family," pp. 9-34 in SUNDBERG-GOTT; J.A.W., Outline, 12113.

HAYDEN, 450-451, adds a third child--Miriam Ashby; this is extremely dubious, for she is nowhere cited in any of the extensive abstracts of relevant Fauquier Co., Va. records collected by PP in J.A.W., U.G.S., #4, PP correspondence, 10/9/1959.

HAYDEN, 450-452, is apparently accurate, however, in indicating that Capt Nimrod Ashby's younger brother, John Ashby, was the greatgrandfather of the celebrated cavalry leader Gen. Turner Ashby, CSA]

In April 1763 he rec'd from the treasurer pay for himself & his men.

JUN 1764 he was Ambushed & killed by Indians en route back to the Fort & robbed of this payment. This amount, 74 pounds, was paid out of his estate. This left his children "destitute of bread". A Petition filed 18 Nov 1766 by Robert Asby, his father. 29 JUN 1764 Estate appraised. Nimrod had advanced his own credit to procure uniforms & supplies for his men. 1
Petition filed 18 Nov 1766 by Frances (Wright) Ashby, his widow.

Frances Ashby, widow of Nimrod Ashby - 1764

The following Ashby's were found in the Journals of the House of Burgesses, Volume 10, pages 281 and 363. Though not linked to any Taylor family the Ashby's resided in north Fauquier County. Nimrod Ashby married Frances Wright 30 November 1759 in Fauquier County.

Journals of the House of Burgesses of Virginia-Petitions of Robert Ashby and Frances Ashby.

December 1, 1764: A Petition of Robert Ashby, setting forth that Nimrod Ashby his Son was in the Year 1763 stationed on the Frontiers, with the Command of a Detachment of Militia, that in the Month of April 1764 the said Nimrod received from the Treasurer a considerable Sum of Money, as well for his own Pay as the Pay due to his Men; that on his Return back to the Fort where his Men were stationed, in Order to pay them the Money which was respectively due them, and to discharge some Debts which he had been under a Necessity of contracting there, he was surprised by a Party of Indians, who murdered him, and took from him L74, which Sum has been since paid out of his Estate for the Purposes aforesaid; which, together with his ordinary Debts, hath reduced his whole Estate, and left two poor helpless Orphans destitute of Bread; and praying that this Honourable House will take the same into their Consideration, was presented to the House and read. (Volume 10, pg 281).

May 22, 1765: A Petition of Frances Ashby, setting forth that her deceased Husband Nimrod Ashby commanded a Company of Militia on the Frontiers in the Year 1763, and that he was under the Necessity to advance his own Credit to furnish the Militia with Clothes and other Things for the Service; that he employed certain Persons as Pilots or Runners, who with several others empowered him to draw their Pay which he did; and on his Return to the Frontiers was attacked by a Party of Indians, who murdered him and took from him all his Money, to the Amount of 66 or 67 Pounds, and praying the Relief of this House. (Volume 10, pg 346)

December 3, 1766: Resolved, that it is the Opinion of this Committee that the Petitions of Francis and Robert Ashby, to be reimbursed the Sum of 67 pounds, said to have been taken from Nimrod Ashby by a Party of Indians, by whom it was supposed he was killed, be rejected. William Scriven BROCKINGTON

ABT 1820 - AFT 1885

ID Number: I33022

  • OCCUPATION: C.S.A. Co. F, 25th S.C. Vols
  • RESIDENCE: Turkey Creek, Williamsburg Dist. SC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1820

Father: John BROCKINGTON III
Mother: Sarah "Sally" NESMITH

Family 1 : Ausy NESMITH

Notes

"William Scriven Brockinton was also a school mate, as was also Ausy Nesmith, his wife. He was a private soldier in Co. F, 25th S.C. Vols. He is now the owner of the old Homestead on Turkey Creek. We sold the land to him, and he occupies the house in which so many happy days of my boyhood and early manhood were spent. My brother "Burry" and I visited him there in 1885. I can not say the visit was one of unmixed pleasure. With the first view of the house from the (blank) in the avenue, at Heddlestone Bay, came rushing into my mind so many recollections of the past, and of dear departed, that I was overpowered by my emotions, and by the time I reached the gate I was too full for utterance. When we were ushered into the family sitting room, and saw the places on each side of the hearth that in time past used to be occupied by my father and mother, the children, more than half now "on the other side of the river", completing the half circle in front of the broad, old fire place, my tears could no longer be kept back. I asked my cousin not to make me talk to him then. He seemed to appreciate my feelings, and did not press further conversation at that time. The next morning we were allowed (considerately) to wander over the old place and look at the familiar spots, everyone bringing back reminiscences of the days gone by. But two of the many outbuildings erected by my father were standing, the gin houses and one other house. The packing screw was a dilapidated and useless piece of machinery. We strolled to the site of the Negro quarters. The long street of houses were all gone, except one. That was occupied by Jack (Debby). The poor fellow seemed almost gone with consumption, or some other wasting disease. The dwelling house was in a remarkably good state of preservation. Father Time seemed to have contented himself with laying his ruthless hand on the outbuildings on the plantation. The slight increase in the size of the trees surprised me. They seemed to have stopped their growth for sixteen years. Perhaps the departure of the family stunned them with grief, and they had been waiting all these years for the nurturing hand of the mistress whom they no more shall know." [S1246]

"From "History of Mississippi Baptists" by Leavell & Bailey, in1743 she lived in Dinwiddie County near Petersburg, VA with her first husband William Jones and their son John.

By the beginning of the Revolutionary War, she and Richard lived in South Carolina near the mouth of the Black River on the Peedee River about 60 miles from Florida.

In 1780 with her husband, sons John, William, Benjamin and Richard, Jr. (and other members of Courtney and Curtis families) she made a perilous journey down the Holston River to Cole's Creek above Natchez, Mississippi. They organized the Salem Baptist Church. In the group were John Courtney who married Hannah Curtis and James Cole who married Jemima Curtis. An interesting and detailed account of their experiences is recorded in "A Popular History of Baptists in Mississippi.""

Egbert married a second time and had at least 9 children in Kentucky and Missouri where he died. Henry lived in Howard Co Mo and was, from all accounts, quite a colorful personality. His sister Elvira Frances Shields who married Washington Lafayette Vaughan was my grand-mother. They lived in Nelson Co Va."
