In the name of God Amen the sixth day April in the year of our
Lord Christ one thousan d seven hundred and eighty one I James
Collings of St. Margarets Parish in the County of Culpeper being
very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks
be to God therefore calling to mind the mortatily of body and
knowing that it is appointed for all men once ______ do make and
ordain this my last Will and Testament as manner and form
following that is to say principally and first of all
I give my soul to God who gave it Trusting that through the
mercy and merits of Jesus Christ my blessed Saviour to receive
full pardon of all my sins in life committed and be received
into eternal Bliss and my body I give to the earth to be buried
in Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of
executors hereafter mentioned and as touching such worldly
estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I give and
dispose of in the following manner and form.
I give to my five sons Francis Collings, James Colings, Tandy
Collings, Thomas Collins and John Collings all my lands to be
equally divided among accepting forty acres more or less to be
laid of out of the tract of land I now ow[n] beginning at Jack
Smiths corner and thence along Edward Broadus' line till it
crosses ______ about one hundred yards to a broken top pine for
William Broadus which he has made a purchase of me.
It. I leave this plantation whereon I now live with the use of
the house and lands adjoining thereto to my loving wife Mary
Collings to be by her held in peacable & quiet possession during
her natural life likewise the rent of my other plantation, till
my son Francis Collings comes of age.
It. I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Collings one negro
boy named Jim to her and her heirs but if she should die leaving
no issue the said negro to be equally divided among my eight
children namly, Margaret Collings, Milley Braodus, Francis
Collings, Mary Collings, James Collings, Tandy Collings, Thomas
Collings and John Collings.
It. I give and bequeath to my son, Francis Collings one negro
boy named Taff to him an d his heirs.
It. I give and bequeath to my son James Collings one negro boy
named Harry to him and his heirs but if either of the boys
should die leaving no issue the said negroes to be equally
divided among my eight children before mentioned.
It. I lend to my loving wife Mary Collings all my estate both
personal and real during her natural life but if it should be
her mind at any time to give up any part or all of my estate it
is to be publickly sold giving twelve months credit, likewise at
her decease all to be sold giving the same credit and the money
to be equally divided among my eight children before mentioned,
my daughter Nancy Collins is only to have her equal part, my
moveable estate & I do hereby constitute, ordain, appoint Col.
James Barbour, my wife and my son Francis Collins Executors of
this my last Will & Teatament.
Witnesses whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day &
year above mentioned.

Most of the Courtney and Curtis men were Patriots and several of
them fought in a volunteer militia unit headed by Eliaas Dubose.
In 1780 Richard moved his extended family, due to the hostility
between the loyalists and the patriots via flat boat on the TN,
OH & MS rivers to Natchez District, MS. When they arrived in1781
they were given land grants on Coles Creek by the Spanishwho
controlled the territory.
